Does exactly what it is supposed to do. As with all Western Digital hard drives I have owned, internal and external, it handles data storage without a hitch. The Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB External sat quietly next to my desktop computer for over a year. I hardly knew it was there until I needed to access files. About three months ago my computer crashed. Thanks to the auto backup program in my security software, and this unit, when I replaced my computer I was able to restore all of my data files. I wouldn't be without one. The only con I have is the software that is loaded on the drive out of the box. Western Digital should make this software optional and available online and should provide a detailed description of those programs and what there uses are instead of taking up useful space on the drive.Read full review
There is a constant demand for movies and TV shows around my house. So $60 for a terabyte portable external hard drive for all of that to be stored on instead of 3 different computers and no more burning DVDs'.. OF COURSE I JUMPED ON IT. What is not to like: its a terabyte, its not an eyesore but instead sleek and compact, even my mom can navigate it, though I don't use the backup software or encryption software that comes on board I played with it before my setup and its way easy, idiot user friendly and very nice/simple but detailed user profile. Not a single thing to not like. Bet your bottom dollar I would purchase it again and again.
I have found that external 1TB HHD goes hand in hand with my PC that has 1TB also, I don't have to worry about backing it up and I just plug it in and let it go. Very simple to use, but worth its weight in gold. Its the best backup I have ever seen, and in front of the pack when your looking for a external means to back up your files. I would recommend to anyone to secure your files
Very sturdy. Quiet. Good price. I use it for my surveillence system recording (had to take out hard drive from the casing, which was pretty easy). Works great
WARNING TO ALL BUYERS !!!I WILL RATE 0 STAR IF I COULD. this works well until the board inside the casing is defective. That may only be the mini USB plug having bad contact and your are screwed because the hardware encrypt your files with 256 bit encryption per default. the data on the drive is completely inaccessible without the encryption chip in the Western Digital enclosure. So a simple failure of the USB or power connector can mean your data is gone. Even if the drive is removed from the enclosure and connected directly to a computer, it will be unreadable because the hardware encryption chip is missing. look in internet forums zillions of complaints..There is NO WAY to recover the files. it cost $45 to just repair by replacing the USB plug IF it is the problem. NO SOFTWARE CAN RETREIVE THE FILES I have other portable drive (Seagate) that I can remove from the casing and use inside a PC with NO PROBLEM. deactivate the encryption before it is too late.(IF YOU CAN OR DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK.OR HAVE 2 BACK UPS OF YOUR BACKUPS OTHER THAN WD MY BOOK.Read full review
