This was my first purchase and therefore use of a gps unit. I was fairly proficient at figuring out the basics of its use. I did find the manual lacking in information for the novice. I purchased this unit to help me navigate a 1900 mile motorcycle tour of the south. The unit stopped working after about 150 miles, I had the shortsightedness to NOT take some sort of backup navigation aid. But, after being witness to the good will of a retired marine stopping to aid a couple of bikers sitting on the side of the highway using a cell phone to call for directions, (he would have it no other way than to give us his own road atlas). We where back on the road after just a short rest. We tried the gps unit occasionally to see if it would come back on, it did a couple of times, but for just a few moments, then would go black again. Being on the road on bikes we were not prepared to troubleshoot electronic items so we made do with our trusty old road atlas the remainder of the trip. After arriving back home I plugged the gps unit into my home computer for a couple hours just to see if it would recharge,..it did. Turns out, the accessory plug on my Harley vibrates a little to much for the liking of the plug on the gps unit as the two had apparently separated slightly causing a recharge problem while riding. I have been using this unit for three weeks now with not a single issue. I am happy with my purchase. As great as it now functions in my car I will not recommend this for use on a motorcycle for the following reasons: It needs to have an ear bud to be able to hear the voice directions over the noise of riding, it also has no optional cover available to protect it from the elements.Read full review
I've been driving around on a Magellan 860 for the last couple of years and have logged about 40,000 miles on it. As a last minute gift I bought the 5045 for my wife and then we went on college road trips for my daughter. The unit was flawless. My favorite features are the road sign prompts and the multiple destination trip sets. I bought two more for myself and my daughter when we finally get her a car. LOVE IT.
I spend a few hours a week looking for local addresses and would rather focus on traffic than be distracted looking at street signs. My Mother has a Magellan and is even able to find our house with no problems so I gave it a try. I really like the large display because it is easy to see. Programing the unit is very easy as it only displays the keys that are relevant and eliminates keys as you type to make it easy to enter addresses. This is a very reasonable unit that has saved me hours and made looking for addresses much safer. Not only would I buy another unit, I would recomend this unit for others seeking a value priced solution for finding driving directions.
I love this GPS especially the big screen and easy to use icons.I just don't like installed battery life its only 2hours. Other than I'm happy for it...
I like Magellan Roadmate 5045 Automotive GPS Receiver because for the first time using this device I'm able to get to my destination on time. Usually, I'm afraid to go long distant or go to a new place on my car in anticipating of getting lost into a wrong direction. With GPS is liked eye opener that gives me confidence travel anywhere I wanted to go.
