The "Essential" in the title is misleading. This volume is more a pamphlet than as book, less than 70 pages and little text. There are several known potential disastrous failure points on this series and none of them are mentioned. Nor are the multitude of options that were available described in the book. There is no attempt to inform the reader of which models and options are worth looking at and which are not. There are numerous postage stamp sized photos which purport to show off details of these cars but they are so small and taken at such a distance that they are virtually worthless. Save your money and join a Porsche forum to find out what you need to know before buying one of these cars.

I wouldn't purchase a 996 without getting as educated as possible on the series. This book was very helpful. It's written more from the UK perspective but they do a great job making it just as relevant to U.S. buyers.
