SynopsisA stunningly powerful novel of humanity's will to survive against all odds during an epidemic by a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. An International Bestseller * "This is a shattering work by a literary master."--Boston Globe A city is hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" which spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there the criminal element holds everyone captive, stealing food rations and raping women. There is one eyewitness to this nightmare who guides seven strangers--among them a boy with no mother, a girl with dark glasses, a dog of tears--through the barren streets, and the procession becomes as uncanny as the surroundings are harrowing. A magnificent parable of loss and disorientation, Blindness has swept the reading public with its powerful portrayal of our worst appetites and weaknesses--and humanity's ultimately exhilarating spirit. • Unforgettable Read

The idea of a doomsday sci fi novel winning the Nobel Prize for literature is what caught my interest. The style is unlike any I ever seen. No quotation marks for speakers, four page paragraphs, and filled with characters that are never named. This last feature actually made it easier to know each character better than if named. The story itself is multi-layered. A story of despair but also of hope. A story describing the worst in the human condition and the best. It is one of the top 5 novels I have ever read and that covers 60+ years!

  • Really?!

The book begins somewhat intriguing, there is a slight build in the middle, it continues... and continues with no major climactic event. The are moments of action, dispare, and trepidation. It was a lot like a wordy Lord of the Flies. But; a Nobel Literature Prize? Not in my opinion.
