Most movie tie-ins for video games are mediocre to bad, but not so for Top Gun for the NES. Clearly a lot of love went into this game: the graphics were great for the time, it includes some slick 8 bit music and the controls are smooth and crisp. Before launching, you select what missiles you carry before go into battle. You have the choice of small warhead but large quantity to huge warheads but only a few of them. The battle are typical for an air combat game, but having radar helps to watch your blind spots and you get a warning if an enemy fighter is trying for a missile lock on your tail. The rest of the instruments are clean and nice looking with useful information. This game is hard (damn you carrier landings!) but there's plenty to enjoy, worth putting in practice into and a fine addition to every NES library!Read full review

All right Top Gun a classic movie. Did the NES do it justice? pretty much considering the ability of the 8bit platform. Couple of things that get me in this game. Is it really that hard to land a jet? I mean usually if the pilot messes up he either touches or does a fly around for another shot. This game you get one shot and if you miss you die. That sucks. Also I thought it was the fueling pilot's job to hit the mark not the ace. I mean all he has to do is keep it at a steady speed and the fueling plane does the rest. In top gun you have a moron working the fuel pump and you have to make all the adjustments to refuel successfully. If you fail you might as well reset or give up cause your dead. Other than that, being able to choose your missles and locking on to planes is cool. I give this a good overall ratingRead full review
I like the high flying in the skies shootin' down "the enemy". The chalenge of landing on the aircraft carrier. Speking of which its a good thing that they have on screen directions. That helps give you more of a flying experience on top of the missions themselves. Since I will never be an Airforce pilot and chances are niether will you unless you study and work real hard at it for years, you might as well get this game to get a feel for "the experience". It is a game that I loved as a young kid and still love to this day!
Wanted to play this game that I remember from when I was a kid. Game arrived in good shape and just as described.
