I bought this book because I read it several years ago and realize now that it has become one of my favorites. If you like forensic psychiatry, profiling, and shows like Forensic Files, Cold Case Files and CSI, you will LOVE this book. This is a fascinating story of a team of thrown together detectives trying to track down a serial killer, whose victims are young male prostitutes. While it is fiction, one can only imagine this story actually occurring. If you can get through the first few pages, you will be glad you gave this book a chance. The narrator of the story, gives a frank account of what life must have been like in New York City in the late 1800's. I certainly have an appreciation for our Child Protection Services of today. If you read this book and love it, you will have to read the sequel, "Angel of Darkness", which is just as good. I am only sorry that Caleb Carr has not written a third.Read full review
It's mostly an excellent book. There are some parts I find tedious. It's almost like it was written by 2 people. At time the words will flow. Interesting and exciting but then later on, the words becomes choppy, wordy, boring and hard to follow. BUT...I still love the book and Caleb Carr's attention to detail. I'm definitely a Caleb Carr fan!

I love hardcover first editions with the dust cover intact. I do my archival dust jacket cover number on them and then I dive in. What a great read (if you like dark, edgy historical Victorian murder mayhem mysteries). ;-)

This book is quite intense and very well done. Showing how forensics "might" have started and where, the story, although gruesome in some areas dealing with the murders, is compelling and the historic background is extremely well documented. Would recommend for anyone interested in forensics or "true crime" advocates.

I am a mystery lover. This is a book of great full noted players, a setting in the 1800’s, and murder oh so wicked. I found myself learning more about the people involved and a connection on the way they move toward the knowledge of the killer. I want everyone to read this book. It is a whodunit and you will keep reading until the end. ENJOY
