I give a 5 Star rating not because for the ease of use but for the possibilities the machine offers. With 14 different stitches, it will suit all my projects. The Singer Professional 5 Serger is just like jumping from the little league to the big one. The key word to really appreciate this machine is “practice”. The first challenge is threading. By chance there are excellent videos on the net for the book (I mean the printed copy include in the box) is really not enough. There is a CD (also include in the box) where you find more information about the threading of all the stitches this machine can execute, but because the pictures and drawings are of low resolution, it is difficult to get a good understanding. Once again one can find excellent videos on the net. This is something Singer should address in the future. To help me in threading for the different stitches, I add identification labels, look at the pictures. When instruction ask for threading the “chain looper” I know the thread follows the brown coded guide up to the chain looper which the one nearest me or the first on the left. I do dressmaking as a hobby, not for a living. The Professional 5 is my third Singer machine. My first is the rocking foot model (more than 100 years old), my second is the 348 model (more than 50 years old); they are both working perfectly. So, you can say that when buying a Singer machine, it is for life, and with a good maintenance program this is something your children will inherit and continue to use for many years. More I use it, easier it gets and more I appreciate it. It is a good buy. Read full review

There is a steep learning curve with this model due to having two lower loopers and multiple settings to learn for the many stitches. I mainly needed a basic 4 thread overlock and the machine came set up with a cover stitch using three needles. Impressive but a beast to get converted. I am very satisfied with the machine otherwise.

I had a 3/4 thread overlock machine for about 15 years which I used only to finish seams and to assist me in hemming pants. I need something more for my online business and one that had some sort of assist in threading the loopers. This machine has a built-in "grabber" which is a huge assist in getting your thread into the back of the looper which is located behind parts difficult to get past. It took awhile for me to figure out how it works but it's a huge help. Some of the drawings and photos in the manual are a little hard to see but I found a wonderful online manual by Singer which helped me enormously. Rather than throwing all the information at you at once as the paper manual does it takes you through the threading set up for each individual type of stitch. This machine includes the cover stitch function so necessary to make knit clothing look professionally done and it works like a charm. The machine runs so smoothly that it doesn't make the shelf on my sewing table shake like my old machine did, even when it was new. I spent 2 afternoons trying out each stitch and was able to master them all.Read full review
great machine so far! A little confusing since it has so many different functions. Plus the feed dog seems to be a little rough so it is snagging the thread on the underside of the fabric/stitch. Hopefully that will go away or I'll have to sand the edges. Anyways, great lovely stitches and pretty machine, too. I sew everyday and I just got this machine and it better last as long or longer than my last serger, which was a cheap Brother, I had it for 9 years. It's kind of annoying having to change the needles and threads to go from overlock to coverstitch, but it saves room. I used to have a separate coverstitch but it didn't make the stitches nearly as beautiful as this singer does. Love all the different stitch options.
The good: It is the most versatile machine I have owned So many stitches! So many feet! Operates quite smoothly and quietly once it is set up. Self threading on the loopers so less need for tweezers than other sergers I have used The self threading loopers don't come un-threaded which is a problem I have had with other self threading sergers The not Bad but be aware: Changing to the different stitches can be a bit tricky, it is a much more intricate machine than your standard serger. I don't think this would be a good first serger, it helps to know and be comfortable with a standard serger already. Pay close attention to the DVD which comes with it and be patient when changing stitches. I have used it for quite a few different garments and I am very happy with my purchase.
