Disney studios produced a lot of great adventure films for boys like Treasure Island, Kidnapped, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Island at the Top of the World. Directed by Disney legend Robert Stevenson, it's only hampered by special effects restrictions of the day. The story is engaging, fast paced and even the presence of David Hartman cannot slow down this ripping yarn.
This movie was a great effort for its time, but it lacked the big name actors and a really solid story to make it work and gain any cinematic acclaim. Funny thing is, if it were done done today, I'd bet this story and with some good graphics and one or two actors with a 'name' and this thing would have a run of pretty good weekends at the box office.
It's a fun movie that requires the viewer to suspend logic a bit as the movie finds the fabled viking island of Valhalla located at the North Pole. I won't go into too much more so as not to ruin the story or the ending, but I will say its a fun ride and one that everyone in the family can enjoy ... right down to the family dog!
This thrilling adventure takes place in the winter of 1907. An English tycoon hires an American archeologist and a French airship captain to go with him in search of his son who disappeared in the arctic two years earlier. Their voyage leads to a volcanic island with a lost Viking settlement ruled by a fanatical high priest of Odin. There is also an exceptionally beautiful heroine played by Sweden's Agneta Eckemyr. The Viking costumes, weapons, settlement and temple are like something right out of a history book. Even though this movie was released in 1974, the props and visual effects are excellent even by today's standards. The original music by Maurice Jarre is exciting and fits perfectly with the scenery and action. I would highly recommend this movie to lovers of high adventure, fans of Jules Verne, and anyone who admires the Vikings.Read full review
My dad took me to see this one in the theater back in 1974 when I was 7 years old. It blew me away and helped fuel a lifelong love for adventure/fantasy. Hey, who doesn't like a cool adventure? The story is set in the early 1900's and concerns a rich Englishman who leads a rescue party deep into the Arctic in search of his missing explorer son. They track him to a mysterious lost colony of Vikings that has been cut off from the outside world for centuries. The plot is a fairly typical "Lost World" format: 1/3rd of the movie is spent searching for the lost world, 1/3rd is spent exploring the lost world, 1/3rd is spent being chased around/from the lost world. It's all fairly exciting, but not deep enough to impress an adult veiwer. (However, with some deft tweaking this could be GREAT remake material for Disney.)
I bought the dvd recently to take a trip down memory lane and I wasn't disappointed. It held up well to my memory. Yes, the effects are dated and some of them are downright terrible, but others are surprisingly good, and overall the film has a wonderful pre-CGI charm. You'll also get vibrant outdoor shots and some of the best matte work you'll find in ANY movie. It's not a bad choice for adventure/fantasy fans looking for family-friendly fare. Probably your only chance to see this film anymore is on DVD. Be sure to get the 30th anniversary edition as it has the extras.Read full review
