Reviews"Minter's book addresses two key issues that face young children. First, there's the temptation to steal, (and second) that of gender-related categories and the sometimes automatic assumption that (girls) would prefer to play with dolls, dress up or go shopping with her Mum than go exploring in the woods or ride her bike. Billy Helps Max is also a lot of fun to read ...(and) highly recommended." Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

SynopsisFor boys and girls aged 7 to 9-years-old. In this book Max, Ant's younger sister, decides she wants to be more like her older brother, and do things boys do like skateboarding, riding their bikes in the woods or playing battle games. She starts by painting her pink girlie bike a mottled shade of green. Knowing nothing about paints and painting, she covers herself in green gloss, including her hair. Green, matted and hacked at, Max's mum takes her to the hairdresser to get her hair sorted. After Max is cleaned up, her mum has a haircut. While Max and Ant wait for their mum, they visit the local bike and skateboard shop. Max sees go-faster stickers she really wants for her newly pained bike, but has no money. She has to have them, but her birthday is ages away. Giving in to temptation, she convinces herself it's okay to take them, and she hides three packets in her jacket. Does Max get caught, or will she own up to her wrong doing? Is it okay to steal from shops? After all they have lots of things in them. Find out what happens to Max and her dishonesty. Billy Helps Max is the fifthth title in the Billy Growing Up series. Each book addresses a unique topic--bullying, arrogant pride, jealousy, lying, stealing, lack of self-belief, understanding money, and secrets. Written to help parents, guardians and teachers deal with the issues that challenge pre-teen children; each topic is presented gently through storytelling. Setting the issues in a meaningful context helps children to understand the challenges, and to see things from a different perspective. The books act as icebreakers allowing for discussions of difficult subjects. Additionally, each title is supported by a free activity book to reinforce the learning, while having fun. Buying this book today will help your child understand that taking things that do not belong to them is not acceptable, and see how doing so can have an impact on others., Stealing is taking something without permission or payment. Children may steal for a dare, or because they want something and have no money, or as a way of getting attention. Max sees some go-faster stickers for her bike, and she has to have them. Her birthday is ages away so she gives in to temptation.
