The Spot-X is decent for what it is, mostly an emergency device. It takes awhile to send / receive messages (like 20 mins) as it needs to communicate with satellites as they orbit past your location. The SOS communications may be faster? Otherwise, it seems okay for now, it's a cheaper alternative to Garmin for the less serious folks. The size doesn't bother me either, as it's very light weight and seems durable. I've yet to try it out in the deeper backcountry.

We have no cell service in this mountainous area of New Mexico. Spot keeps me in touch by messenging any time I leave my home wifi. I'm recommending it as a reliable source of off grid communications.

Used this in the backcountry of Colorado recently and it was a valuable tool as there was no cell signal most of the time. I was able to check-in with my significant other when needed.
