SWINGERS’ Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau join comedic forces once again with this film that also stars Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, and Faizon Love. This comedy follows four couples who take a tropical vacation where they are forced to endure couples therapy. Frequent Vaughn and Favreau collaborator Peter Billingsley directs. Excellent movie for good ole laughs or a movie to pass time by. I would recommend this movie for the comedy goer. Definitely funnier than current movies in theaters like "cop out", but not funnier than 40 year old virgin. Vince vaughn does not disappoint. 4/5 stars.
From the previews, I expected this film to be a wild spoof about couples therapy taken to weird extremes. In reality, nothing that happened was outside the realm of possibility. A married couple in which both partners are career-obsessed workaholics might well consider divorce; two people who have been together since high school would, after 20 years, fantasize about other partners; and a man whose beloved wife has left him might seek solace with an unsuitable younger woman. Yes, these couples DO need therapy! The activities and counseling provided by the therapists are pretty traditional, except that the counseling occurs at a tropical resort rather than a medical office. Each story has a happy ending, which is predictable but at least leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling. But is a happy ending enough when you want to laugh at an outrageous comedy and instead you watch four couples work through their relationship issues? It's not a bad movie if you like that sort of plot, but as a comedy it fell flat for me.Read full review
Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) are on the brink of separating. She hears her biological clock ticking, but their visits to a fertility clinic have been futile due to a low sperm count caused by testicular cancer. Before throwing in the towel, they agree to go for marriage counseling at Eden, an idyllic retreat on Bora Bora billing itself on the internet as the ultimate playground for adults. Besides couples’ therapy, the Polynesian getaway also offers jet skiing, snorkeling, windsurfing, drinking, dancing and all the rest of the amenities one would expect to enjoy at a tropical resort. However, when Jason notices on its website that the group-rate is half the price, he decides to try to talk his buddies into coming along for an impromptu vacation, even though their relationships aren’t in crisis. After being assured that they won’t have to do any therapy sessions at the spa, three other couples book the trip, fully expecting to unwind during a relaxing week of partying and fun in the sun. Only upon their arrival, do they learn that the island is divided in half, with Eden East catering to the sort of hedonistic delights they were anticipating while Eden West has a mandatory daily regimen with activities designed with troubled relationships in mind. Consequently, they all end up under the thumb of Monsieur Marcel (Jean Reno), a “Couples Whisperer” who claims he can cure any ailing marriage. Unfortunately, instead of bringing these folks closer together, his probing tends to create problems where there were none before. Couples Retreat is a breezy sitcom that takes a lighthearted look at the state of male-female relating. To its credit, this refreshingly-tame chucklefest figured out how to elicit lots of laughs without having to resort to the sort of meanspirited insults which have become the staple of the battle-of-the-sexes genre.Read full review
COUPLES RETREAT IS A GOOD VINCE VAUGHN MOVIE. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I AM A FAN OF HIS WORK. OVERALL IT WAS A 4/5. MOVIE HAD A NICE PLOT WITH SOME VERY GOOD HUMOR. IF I HAD TO POINT OUT A FLAW IT IS THAT VAUGHN SOMETIMES REALLY TRIES HARD TO MAKE US LAUGH. WHEN HE DOES THAT IT REALLY ISN'T FUNNY. HUMOR SHOULD COME NATURALLY AND WHEN HE REALLY TRIES TO HUMOR IT TURNS OUT FLAT. PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS OTHER VAUGHN FLICKS. IF YOU LIKE HIS OTHER COMEDIES YOU WILL LIKE THIS ONE.
Great movie. I love it. Its a real movie based on things that can really occur in relationships.
