  • Hidden Gem or Out of Date Delay?

The PS-2 is a gem of a box, if you can get it for the right price. I say that because there are so many great multi-effect and delay boxes out there for very cheap, this is something of a luxury box... I'll explain why. It provides multiple options for fx in this compact pedal: an easy 1 octave up or down; a non-harmonising, or fixed pitch shifter; various delay times ranging from very short slap-back up to 2 seconds. The octave function is worth noting because I've found it to be more effective, as sitting well with the guitar signal , than many more modern effects boxes. I like it more for this than my Eventide H9, for example. The octave is clear and uncluttered - it's a single octave, with the original guitar signal - for some reason many effects boxes don't do this simple thing.. The manual mode is a non-harmonising, or fixed pitch shifter. I've not used this a great deal, except to slightly off-set the pitch to give a chorus sound, which adds some high end definition the signal.. like an enhancer. It's an excellent extra tool to use from this pedal. The delay is superb and provides excellent long delay times (in it's day one of the longest in a compact pedal) great for those Brian May, 'Brighton Rock' renditions. It's quiet and quite functional - however for complex delays there are a lot more modern and functionality rich delay boxes out there.. they of course cost more. I like the tone of the delays. I've achieved inspiring delay lines with this .. I think it has some major mojo but not in a vintage way; to me it sounds modern. These were made in both Japan and Taiwan. I haven't done a direct comparison between models produced in both countries, however I can't imagine the difference would be noticeable. Others may want to add their experience on this.

  • For years my go to digital delay

I have been using the Boss Ps-2 pitch shift/delay since the 90's. Why? Because it has many things it does very well and sounds amazing on recorded tracks for a multitude of delay and pitch shifted settings. It does your standard short slapback like 50ms on mode 1 which when paired with an analog delay gives you that short delay into long delay or other way round. Mode 2 is the one I use the most between 250-500 ish ms. Layered into a second delay set for a shorter time gets that really dynamic sounding delay that is bouncing between 2 distinct times. Mode 3 is the longest setting good for doing sound on sound. Mode 4 is the manual adjusted pitch which goes from beautiful detune/chorus to stepped intervals. I set this usually 3rd or 5th below. Mode 4 is octave up and mode 5 octave down. Both of these can be blended and used very convincingly with fuzz for interesting results. IMHO one of the best Boss pedals ever built. I use on all my pedlaboards. Can you buy a cheaper digital delay, yes. Can you buy one that has this many features for around 80-100 dollars? Doubtful. Try one out it will spark creativity that I promise.

  • Old but as good as new.

It's in optimum condition considering it's age. On crackle sound in between selection and a joy to play. I realize this is my missing link to produce the sound that I wanted. With good sound I enjoy for longer periods.

  • Great for guitar

I thought it was really interesting that this pedal allows open tuning of the harmonized section. I'm finding that it isn't the best on bass guitar because the frequencies of bass with the harmony can cancel each other out. Also the harmony range is not incredibly wide. I would have liked to see also open timing for the delay section and the ability to use both delay and harmony simultaneously. There are also only really a couple of sweet spots on the open tuning harmonizer... This pedal sounds great on guitar. I wish it was a little cleaner on bass but the frequency cancellation causes the volume to oscillate.
