As a southpaw guitarist in a right-axed world, high-end guitars are slim pickings. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to assemble a pretty magnificent collection of desirable and iconic lefties: a Martin D-28, a Gibson J-45, a Gibson Custom Shop Hummungbird Birdseye in Vintage Cherry Sunburst (I believe it is the only model like it on earth), a Gibson Songwriter Delixe Studio Cutaway, a GuiId F-30, a Les Paul Custom that blows out windows, a Strat with Texas hot pickups, a very sweet sounding Taylor acoustic 12-string, and more. When I saw this 2004 D-41on EBay, I coughed out my Cheerios. I rolled the dice and bought it, and my life is complete. On YouTube, in my favorite local guitar shop, at gigs, and at concerts over the decades, I have seen and heard many D-41s, but never an "L.” Unlike righties, we can't stroll into the guitar shop and ask to play a bunch of guitars. We are lucky to find one or two in stock. So we takes our chances. This D-41 L is my fourth daughter, my second dog. It can go from angelic to greasy blues and rock with ease and clarity. It handles aggressive struming and complex finger picking with equal tone and projection. It is the guitar that will be in my casket ... until they bury me, when I hope my 14-year-old daughter, who is also a southpaw player like me, takes it, coddles it, and thinks of me every time she tunes up and plays. The seller's presentation of the instrument was spot on, and I simply can't be more pleased. It rocks. By the way, my last name is Martin.Read full review
I already own a Martin OM 28 Marquis and a Martin D 18 Golden Era, so I guess the D 41 Special was just icing on the cake. The D 41 Special is, well, special...it has a Sitka spruce top, abalone inlay and forward shifted x bracing. It has a sound all its own with plenty of shimmer, yet balanced. It can be driven with a flat pick, just like my other Martins, with no decay. While the Adirondack-topped marquis and golden eras are direct, clear and woody, the D 41 Special sparkles and still drives clear notes and chords. Don't let anyone tell you abalone inlay 40 series Martin guitars are just the same as any other Martin guitar. They are unique and hold a special sound. The last comment I'll make is that the 1 and 11/16 nut works perfectly with finger picking and flat picking. I'm used to playing a 1 and 3/4 nut with my OM 28 Marquis and D 18 Golden Era, but the D 41 Special works just as well with a slightly smaller nut. Interesting enough, the D41 Special is only 1/32 smaller when you measure the bass string to treble string width, end to end. I guess that's why I didn't notice a difference when finger picking. Hope this helps you with your next guitar purchase!Read full review

One of the greatest guitars of all time. Almost every major recording artist that used an acoustic guitar played a Martin - from the 1940s to today - Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, CSNY, Eric Clapton to name just a few. This 50 year old beauty has been beautifully cared for and has tone and action that are incomparable. I have a fine collection of 6 relatively high end acoustic guitars and this is my favorite period. When a perfect note or chord is struck you can feel it in your bones. Martin D-41, D-42, and D-45 guitars exemplify the epitome of the guitar crafter's art.

The D41 for the mo why has just enough bling and while not the d45 I have played them side by side and while the 45 is amazing. It’s just not worth the money. The only place to go is cocobolo and that’s at least 12 grand. I own an absolutely incredible cocbolo FGL00014F this was my dream guitar and now it’s my main acoustic actually my only besides a 12 string. I look at my d41 and love it however it’s like having a corvette and comparing it to a Ferrari. It the d41 is killer especially if you play harp and open tunings

It's a Martin, nuff said! Seriously, this will be the only accoustic guitar you will ever want or need. It is the classic Martin sound that resonates throughout anywhere it is played. Style, class, sound quality, it's all there and it will last from beginning to end. It is worth the extra money. Save up and do it right.
