The faded series from Gibson are not the flashiest looking offerings, but the tone....pure screaming joy. I have found that with mine, wherever my arms lays, the finish has pretty much polished itself up. I may or may not finish shining the rest of it up with a jeweler's cloth. I kind of like the rough and ready appearance of it as is. If you've ever spent a few hours with an LP Standard or Custom across your shoulders, that 9 lb. beast tends to wear you out. These are much lighter due to the chambering in the body, and it makes a world of difference to me. Practice sessions can go on longer without me feeling worn out and distracted from shoulder pain. The neck profile is definitely a bit on the chunky side, and I will be addressing that in the near future. 0000 sandpaper is your friend when applied correctly and evenly. The top 3 frets also needed to be dressed down a tad out of the box, as there was an almost 3 step pitch shift (!!) depending upon how hard I fretted a note. It was a 30 minute job, and it is definitely my favorite guitar now out of the dozen here on hand. My only real negative is that Gibson is now selling these with super cheesy "gig bags" that I wouldn't tote my 1983 Hondo across town in. If they feel they must skimp on the hard case, then for the love of everything holy, PLEASE pad the thing appropriately. They are $5.00 bags, utterly useless for protection against anything except minor scratches. All in all, the guitar is a great buy, and a great player that won't nosedive in value like a competitor's offerings that are MIM. Peace, and rock on!Read full review
I will review the LP Studio I had which was a Black 85 or 86, They were pretty much the same those two years anyway. Ebony fret board with dot inlay's was mine. That guitar played extremely well And sounded awesome. At that Time I had another Les Paul also. It was a cherry sunburst standard. The Studio felt better. No doubt. It was a guitar everyone that played it loved it and finally one of those people got it. I play fenders also. I wont compare a Fender to Gibson type guitars, as they are two worlds of different sound of which both are awesome. That 85 Ebony board dot inlay Studio was a joy to play. Now I'm looking again as remember how cool that one was. I don't have to get 85 dot but I will want early as can find with ebony a fret board choice. I don't know if it was fluke or what but that was a damn good guitar.Read full review
I want to start off by saying that this is a great guitar. I mean, you are getting a Gibson for the price of an epiphone on this one. It is made really well, its all one peice of wood. The complaints I have, is that for starters you wont get too much sustain out of the stock pickups. Also, if you dont have it switched to the bridge pickup, then its got CRAZY bass. You might have to adjust the pickup config. using the switch and tone knobs to really find that sweet spot. Pinch harmonics ring out on this real nice. Overall a great guitar and a great value. Wouldn't trade it for anything but a higher quality Gibson. Great Guitar!!!!!
This is a great guitar for the money. I paid $500 for the guitar in a hard shell case. The Studio is a no frills model, but I love the simple look. It plays great right out of the box. The action is low, making it easy to play, and the sound of a Gibson is a joy.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
I instantly fell in love with this instrument! The quality, playability, aesthetics, tone, condition and color of it are beyond expectations or reproach. I purchased this ax because I wanted a Les Paul without having to sacrifice quality of instrument, rent, food and utilities and, I find all pros and no cons with this guitar. Truth be told, it's one of the best playing ax's I've ever had in my hands. Along with this item I also purchased a 1998 Les Paul 'The Paul' guitar. It also, qualitatively, is exemplary. I now understand why these instruments are so expensive and held in such high esteem. Now that I've had the opportunity to own and play these guitars, I realize that even if they'd have cost three times the money , they are worth every penny. I find it difficult taking my eyes off them or putting them down. Long story short, I can't wait to get my paws on another one.Read full review
