Unleashing American imagination through illustration
Did Norman Saunders pander to a repressed American imagination? Decide for yourself.
Reprints many rare and provocative Saunders cover illustrations from the detective and girly PULPS; these alone will please many of his art fans. Western art covers receive some attention, but some key covers were left out. Book provides a wonderful overview of Saunders’ work in all the print media of the 20th century—the heyday of print media before illustration was crowded out by photography. There are sections on Saunders’ work on COMIC BOOK covers and collectible bubble gum CARDS, reprinting some rare comic covers and cards. There is a section on 1960s MEN’S magazines which may capture your imagination--bondage & violence. Of great interest to Saunders’ fans is that many of his fine art paintings are apparently first published here. David Saunders gives a great overview of Norman Saunders career and works. Recommended gazing and reading.
