  • DL380 Performance vs dollars in 2016

This is a good server for someone with a need to have a dual quad core cpu with the capability to have dual hex cores running at 3 ghz. The memory is fast and can run at 1333mhz. There are plenty of options in configuring the memory to be fault tolerant or dual channel/interleaved or whatever you neeb. It can support 192gb of ram and the ram can be found for as little as $1 a gb. The raid controller is excellent and can support raid 0 to 1+0. There are 8 drive bays, the caddys are cheap, the server also has sata as well as sas. The raid controller is battery backed and has 512mb of cache. This is a cheap option as the card battery and cable can be found for $15. CPU upgrades are cheap too as you can get quad core xeons that run at just under 3ghz for about $15 each. The cpu heat sink comes in two twpes, a 80 watt and a 95 watt. The labels on the heat sinks lead you to believe you need a specific heatsink but in reality the 80 watt heat sink works fine with a 95 watt cpu if your server room is cool enough. There are 8 fans in the front of the unit that sound like a jet engine if you set the bios for maximum cooling but if you set the bios for maximum performance and system managed cooling the units are quiet until they are busy. I have 40 of these in my small server room and they are quiet and run cool, if your load is distributed they stay quiet and cool. Power consumption is about 100 watts while not working hard and 400 watts when going full tilt. I have 10 plugged into an APC current monitoring strip and they typically use 7 amps total at 208 volts. This is just under 1500 watts that will be covered with a cheap 1500 watt ups. Obviously once they get more work going they are going to use up to 5kw in a rack of 10. The units have dual power supplies and you can run one supply off of one utility and the other off a different utility but you can also run both supplys off of the same utility if you need redundant power supplies. These things are so cheap you could buy one just to replace cpu heat sinks, chassis fans, and a spare power supply. They usually come with about $25 worth of ram, a pair of sas hard drive with caddys worth $30, another $30 worth of cpu's, $20 for heat sinks, $20 for a power supply so before you even buy the chassis you have $125 worth of spares. This isnt even counting the raid cache card that it usually comes with or the 2 gbe interfaces. This is an excellent ebay deal when you can pick one of them up for under $200 but is frequently found for $150.
