I've had six pregnancies and delivered four of my babies at home (one by accident, three by plan), one in a birthing center and one in a hospital. I also have a Master's in Nursing. This is one of two pregnancy books I always recommend to friends who are expecting. The other is Ina May Gaskin's classic, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. Don't miss it! See what you think about it for yourself.

What a wonderful book! The book has enabled me to learn so much about my past birth and my future births. Although the book is a few years old, the information Henci gives is timeless! I so wish I would have learned about my first birthing experience by reading this book beforehand rather than experiencing my C/S birth. I also have learned so much from being a member of ICAN, International Cesarean Awareness Network, too. I encourage all who are expecting or about to embark on becoming pregnant, to include this book in your library. Knowledge is Power!!
This book was a fabulous resource, and I'm disappointed I did not decide to read it before my third pregnancy! Super informational with tons of great resources listed. Henci Goer has taken the headache of statistical data for you. My only complaint is that she did all this research, but only included the statistics that support her side (Vaginal birth, in the most natural circumstances possible) As a person who had a legitimate Cesarean, I would have liked to see the numbers for the opposing side as well. Overall an A+ for any woman who wants to be empowered and know what she's talking about in regards to birth.
For woman who are seeking a better way to birth and are finding opposition from their care provider this book gives you the up front medical reference that you need to make informed choices and consent. Ms Goer is a medical researcher so do not look for frilly writing here - it is direct to what you need to know. She states what the medical profession does, what the medical research proves and what does and does not work in the birth setting. A must read for those seeking a more natural alternative to sometimes medicalized event. For those who are taking a Bradley Method class this is a book to memorize and take with you if you have a hospital birth or into your OB's office when you need to ask questions about your upcoming birth.
The information I got from this book was just an eye opener, it promotes the women’s ability to have natural births even after a C-section and shows the pros and cons of all the procedures applied by hospitals, it is very straight forward . After reading this book I was able to put my doubts to rest about home births and decided to have a water birth at home. It’s your body and baby, educate yourself as much as possible and know your options about giving birth. This book is a great guide.
