I wish all teachers were like Mr. Falker. Teachers have a wonderful opportunity to change a child's life, it just may take a little digging and a watchful eye to see how. Teachers also can impact a child's life for greatness but to often they let them fall through the cracks and pass them on to the next one. Mr. Falker or Mr. Felker (in real life) chose not to let Trisha fail and fall through any cracks. He chose to patiently spend the extra time after school to help solve this young girls learning problem and teaching her to deal with and over come it. By doing this he set a young, insecure, horribly bullied little girl on her way to becoming a wonderful children's author by the name of Patricia Polacco. This is one of my all time favorite children's books that I have gifted over and over to teachers. A must read and a must have for the classroom.Read full review

I have a lot of low readers in my class and I like them to feel that they aren't the only ones who are struggling. It is also important to know that with a little effort on their part and a little effort on the teacher's part, they both can make a difference.

Have you ever had a teacher that made a difference for you as a learner? In this wonderful autobiographical story, Patricia Polacco tells of a teacher who made a difference in her life. She tells the very frustrating story of how she learned to read. Finally, with the help of Mr. Falker she is successful. This story would be wonderful to share with a child who is having difficulty learning to read. The ending is one that could make you cry, as it did me. This as well as all of Polacco's books is a wonderful read aloud.
This is an excellent book. A great tool to teach kids about learning disabilities. I'm the wife of a severe dyslexic and mother of a son with severe dysgraphia and some dyslexia. This book helped me to understand how they felt when they were struggling to learn. I bought this book to share with children at school. It is a great way to explain about learning disabilities. It also shows kids how not to treat people that learn differently from them. I work as a Substitute Teacher, this is one of two books that I carry with me everyday.
Love the author. My students enjoy all her books and how they relate to her childhood. Great purchase!
