NFL Blitz began its journey to the PC as an Arcade game, released by Midway. Staying true to its Arcade roots, the game is not a simulation of real NFL football even though it is licensed by both the National Football League and the National Football League Players Association. NFL Blitz deviates from actual NFL rules in several areas. For example, first downs require a gain of 30 yards and the clock stops between every play, regardless of the outcome. There are no referees in the game, thus penalties are eliminated, and abnormal on-field action is encouraged. Player action is depicted through use of motion captured 3D graphics but there are only nine players included per actual NFL franchise. The game's scoring and action resembles arena football more closely than actual gridiron contests. A myriad of options are available that affect gameplay significantly. A few examples include allowing only four downs to score (failure turns the ball over to your opponent), no interceptions allowed, having the AI give losing teams an unfair advantage, allowing the computer to select plays, no punts, no random fumbles and adjustable clock speed during gameplay. NFL Blitz comes ready for two player action and supports both keyboard and gamepad control. Keys and controller buttons are customizable, permitting each player to configure controls to his or her personal tastes. The game features NFL film clips, special turbo moves and record keeping for up to six players.
