Using the Fedora 12 64 Bit Operating System as the FREE & Open Source way to let this AMD Genie out of its AMD Bottle is an amazing experience. This CPU... when married to the copper piped Cooler Master radiator/fan is such a cool, smooth and slick combo that runs as quiet as The Concord once did at high altitude and Mach II+ speed...and is just as fast! The 64 Bit Linux ISO installs flawlessly and the screen refresh rate on the MSI board with its ATI 200 Chip-Set and on-board video graphics was simply remarkable. If you are completely enamored of the Intel Core 2 Duo series of CPUs, but cannot find the Jingle in Your Pocket to build a machine to handle the demands of the dual processors they sport... then do some shopping around on eBay and be smart enough to lurk around here on something as affordable and performance filled as this combination...and you will not be disappointed! This is the most fun, with most bang for my computing buck that I've had in building a fast and functional machine in a very, very long time! Just DO IT!Read full review
I have an older Compaq SR1620NX based on the MSI Amethyst-M motherboard. As shipped from Compaq it came with an AMD Sempron 3400+ chip. A reasonable system but as it is getting older, newer software has made more demands of it. The motherboard supports faster socket 939 CPU's and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ was recommended by various hardware folks as a low cost way to squeeze more performance out of the system. It did not disappoint. While it is not as fast as the newest systems, the dual core allows my system to work faster now than it was able to with the single core Sempron. I can now watch streaming video without having an incoming email slow things down.
The CPU was needed for a overheating CPU. Even after putting new paste on the heatsink and changeing the heatsink it did not help. I then looked on Ebay for a replacement for the CPU and ended up buying 2 CPUs
I like the upgrade speed of this cpu. I bought it for the speed. I had a AMD Athlon 64 3200+. So this is just what I needed to get up there.
I have upgraded from Athlon 64 3200+. The boot time and flash player performance in the browser improved noticeably.
