Windows 7 is still a useful version from Microsoft and one that paved the way for millions of satisfied customers. It also allowed many users to continue to use meaningful software versions that would, otherwise, be 'land fill material'. And, oh yes, I do have Windows 10 installed on one of my newer computers and find it very interesting and satisfying. I will say, that Windows Vista was one version that appeared to be 'unfinished' when brought to market---but still, we were told we should upgrade computers. I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars upgrading office computers and accomplished little---except sales dollars for merchants. Unfortunately, that will not likely change for most Americans.

It's hard to find clear instructions for specific, simple tasks in the book. Author uses keyboard shortcuts, which I haven't used since DOS and can't imagine anyone else does either, to do things for which most of us have used a mouse for years. There are not enough visuals--as a new user, I need to see what to expect on the screen when I click on menus and options. The cutesy-poo writing style, which amused everyone when the Dummies books first came out, is no longer amusing to an adult who just needs to get used to the software quickly and get tasks done that were familiar and easy on Windows XP. Pop-ups urging the user to download Windows 10 for free interfere with what you are trying to do. To get rid of them, I googled "get rid of windows 10 pop-ups" and got a simple process for deleting Installed Updates (#KB3035583).Read full review

I love Dummies. It's a fact. Without Dummies I would still be lost in the transition from Mac to PCs. One doesn't have to think with a Mac, just do. They're intuitive. This little PC was a challenge for me. Without Windows 7 for Dummies I'd still be lost. In truth, I haven't yet checked out the DVD. I didn't need to explore further so I didn't. I take what I need from Dummies and leave the rest for the next time of need. Someday I may have the interest to read chapter to chapter but it hasn't happened yet. Windows 7 is different from former Windows iterations in a lot of small ways. I find it way different from Macs. Navigation to install my preferred go to search engine and home page was the reason I bought Dummies. It has provided so much more. The index and reference pages are a font of where to find information. It doesn't take an hour to find a two minute answer or even to institute the two minute answer. I'm loving this Dummies tool.Read full review
This is a MUST HAVE book for ALL Windows 7 users. I have been stumbling around with computers for about 20 years. I SHOULD have bought this type of book years ago ... it would have saved me TONS of time and aggravation.

A good book for what it attempts to do, but much of it is a lament of sorts for what was lost when Microsoft dropped Windows XP for Windows 7. And rightly so. I bought the book for help with file management and font management. On both of these topics, this book has little to say, which is hard to forgive. Windows has always handled fonts poorly (it still does), and the Special Character utility does little to help. Partly my disappointment with the book is a disappointment with Windows -- which does some things well, but many things not so well. The book convinced me to stay with Macintosh for its much better skill-set when it comes to files and fonts.

Juse bought a new computer with Windows 7 loaded in, as in the past I bought the new Windows 7 for Dummies. These books are easy to read and you can understand very well. This book also came with a DVD, what a deal. Another great idea to learn more. I have learned alot in the past with other Windows books. Good deal, very knowledgeable.
This book's layout makes the large amount of information easy to access. I bought the book because I just had Windows 7 installed on one of my computers and I needed to know the operating system. Mr. Rathbone has written this book for just that purpose. It has the necessary level of information for me without being overwhelming. I have no dislikes regarding any of computer books I own by Mr. Rathbone.
This book is great for newbies as well as for those upgrading from previous versions of Windows. Although I have been using a computer since 1997, because I was told Windows 7 was so drastically different than previous versions I thought the book would help me learn how much more it does and the easiest ways to do them. I appreciate books that put things in layman's terms, and this book does just that.
These "Dummies" books are a lifesaver for a non-tech guy like myself. You don't have to read the whole book, just the parts you need. If you have a problem,go to that section and the info is readable and concise. No time wasted.Plus the author has a sense of humor about the whole thing,so it doesn't read like some mind numbing manual
I had the Dummies book for the Microsoft program that I ran on my old computer. I was so happy with it, I bought this one. It is very informational and uses language that I can understand. I would recomend it to anyone that runs Windows 7, to purchase this book.
