The beginning definity copies the story of "The Painted Vail", written in the 1920's by Somerset Maugham. So that is a little plagerism. However, I love well writen stories about the China so this one set in Hong Kong is a winner. I love the way the story goes back and forth between the pre-WWII years to the story with some of the same characters in the eary 1950's. Recommend for good light reading.
This is a well written book by a first time author. It covers an area (Hong Kong) that not too much seems to have been written about for the time frame covered. Even though a lot is fiction there is enough true in the book to make it very believable. The charactors come to life and you wonder as you read what will become of them.
Enjoyed the location and time period of the two parts of the story. The inter play of characters keep my interest, I cared about the characters. The book was purchased so our local book discussion group would have a second title to circulate among the members of the group.
recommended by a friend. liked the detailed history of hongkong during the war. didn't care for writing style that much.
