SynopsisAfter experiencing a religious vision, James Tissot (1836-1902) shifted his artistic focus and devoted himself to a project to illustrate the New Testament. This is the first comprehensive explorotion of this extraordinary body of work.
The illustrations by J.J.Tissot are beautifully done. Tissot, who spent much time in the Holy Land to do research, captures the historical and cultural atmosphere of the time of Christ. It's like reading a life of Christ visually. Though some aspects of his depictions of the Holy Land during the time of Christ are now somewhat dated, his illustrations remain a classic example of an artist seeking to portray the historical Jesus in his own times. Tissot was probably one of the earliest artists to undertake such an endeavor.
