Split/Second is a sports car racing game with realistic automobile models, arcade-style action, and destructible environments engineered for massive man-made disaster. Players become contestants in a fictional reality television show that takes speed and violence to new extremes. Races are run in urban and industrial areas constructed especially for the TV show, where buildings, towers, bridges, and other structures are rigged with high-powered explosives. As competitors race around the track, they each gradually fill up a "Powerplay" meter. When full, this meter enables the racer to set off one of the explosive charges. The Powerplay meter fills more quickly as the player performs tricky jumps or squeezes through tight spaces, so precision driving is at a premium, despite the chaotic nature of the courses. The destruction of structures also calls for finesse, as it's in the racer's best interest to use timing and tactics to cause as much obstruction and damage to opponents as possible.

As racers speed around the track, the game's interface highlights structures ahead that could be triggered for destruction, as well as the cars that would probably be affected if they fell. In many places, destroying a building opens up a new shortcut as it blocks the old road. Mastering the driving skills to keep on a controlled line around each track is the key to victory, but players also need quick "split-second" reaction times when another racer unleashes a destructive blast that alters the entire course in front of them. In addition to destroying buildings that tumble across the track, some courses offer racers the opportunity to trigger more unusual disasters, such as a jumbo jet that can be called down to crash-land in the middle of the roadway. Split/Second was created by veteran racing game designers at Black Rock Studio, formerly a part of the Climax Group and developer of games in the MotoGP and ATV series.

a split second review
Different, challenging; added into a race game is picking up power to trigger explosions. The result can wreck other drivers, yourself, and the debris may remain on the track. With the explosions and sabotage, it is surprising Disney created a game based on 'dirty pool/billiards'. You will have to learn how to drift from the get go. While at first I thought it was a nuisance, as well as friends, but it becomes fun. You can pick up power by drifting, drafting or jumping the car. There are different events other than racing. I some events you will have to dodge exploding barrels, or helicopter missiles. Obviously it is not a realistic racing game: explosions, heavy drifting, avoiding missiles. But it is just that, 'a game'. It is interesting, fun, and overall I gave it good ratings.Read full review

Best Racing Game So Far
Split/Second has the most impressive destruction and explosions yet seen in a racing game. Forget Burnout and Motorstorm; from passenger jets exploding across a tarmac as you race under a wing, to detonating power plant cooling towers, to collapsing train tracks, Split/Second assaults your eyes as soon as you're off the starting line. There's so much going on during races that it's often difficult to navigate the game's courses, though the designers usually do a pretty good job of marking turns and plastering visual cues around the track.

A Forgotten Gem
I've only played an hour or so, but I'm impressed with the game show aspect of this game. This is pure arcade action, with insane speed, stunts and environmental destruction. It's easy to grab the controller, skip the tutorial and dive right in.

Truly Amazing
One of the best racing games since the days of Burn Out. Two player split screen fun for you and a buddy, Very fast, cool cars and extremely challenging. The power play triggers are spectacular to watch and satisfying to execute. One element of Split Second that I never experienced in a racing game are Boss battles, very cool! If you never played split second, your missing out on a great experience.

A hiden gem of a racing arcade game.
This game was actually amazing. Its like if need for speed and the burnout games had a baby. Lots of great arcade racing and action with crazy destruction and environmental hazards and whole level changes that can occur during a race. This is a highly recommended game from this gen of games.
