IN THEATRES JANUARY 16, 2009: Coming off the finale of television's popular sitcom THE KING OF QUEENS and 2007's I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY, funnyman Kevin James takes the role of a single dad in this largely physical comedy, which the actor also co-wrote. Paul Blart (James) is a hard worker, but has never landed his dream job of being New Jersey state trooper due to his excess weight. Determined to support his mother and his daughter, Blart takes the slightly less glamorous post as the security guard at his local shopping mall. He never complains, approaching the job with impressive diligence and pride, but doesn't get much respect for it. It's only when a group of misfits in Santa's Helper disguises take hold of the mall and several hostages that Blart's would-be cop smarts come in handy and he gets a chance to shine. With a deadly situation on hand, Blart may finally be able to show the world (and his romantic interest, who just happens to be one of the hostages) what he's made of. Though the villains have several advantages over him, Blart has a Segway scooter and a big heart on his side. While many of its jokes come at the expense of James's extra pounds, the film ultimately makes its star out to be a hero. With his everyman appeal, James is well-suited to play Blart, showing that even average Joes can make a difference with the right attitude. PAUL BLART: MALL COP takes the banal out of the shopping mall, infusing a familiar setting with energy, laughs, and high-stakes drama.
I love it when people get so serious over a movie which is clearly meant to be fun! Obviously anyone who saw this will agree the acting wasn't stellar & the story was hokey by all means, but come on, based on the material it was clearly meant to be a movie to get some laughs & make you feel good. What I really liked about Paul Blart was that Kevin James showed more of a serious & even tender side to himself which we never really got to see in his TV show The King of Queens...you really wanted to see his character become truly happy in life & become the hero he always dreamed of being. And if you are a fan of The King of Queens then you also appreciate the fact that Kevin James had used some people from the show in the movie so there is a level of comfort to add to the story. All in all a very enjoyable movie if you are a fan of Kevin James & his goofball sense of humor. **Oh yeah & as a side note, the soundtrack was full of rockin tunes as well especially with the track 'Can't Hold Back' from Survivor. I had the Greatest Hits from them for a while now & I never really noticed that track until I saw this movie & I love it now!Read full review
Kevin James (TVs The King of Queens and Motion Picture I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry) Stars in this fast-paced comedy that is full of action.
Single, overweight, shy and unsure of himself, Paul Blart (James) is a New Jersey Police wash out who works at the local Mall as a security guard. Paul is constantly ridiculed by most of the shop owners and he is secretly in love with one of the store owners (Played by Jayma Mays).
When thugs, disguised as Santa's Helpers take over the Mall, Paul springs into action to save his true love (Mays).
The action is hard hitting, the comedy is sometimes funny, and the story is well crafted.
The only miss is Paul Blart is too shy and too timid, but overall the movie is fun to watch.
If your a Kevin James fan this is a must see.
Rated 4 of 5 for a good entertaining movie.Read full review
Funny without grunge. Loved at home and in ESL class.
I like Kevin James a lot. He is clever without being dirty. I am also impressed with the physical feats he had to do in this film. He successfully jumps over a counter and shimmies in an air duct as I recall -- not to forget the sliding across the floor which is slowed down by his heft. In other words, he uses his body image both for humor and to show he is not a total wimp.
He seems like a friend you would want to have. His characters are always down-to-earth, pleasant and honest.
I was very pleased with this film. My husband and I both enjoyed it and I will probably use this film in one of my classes where I teach English to people from other countries. Thankfully, I won't have to initiate the movie with an explanation of taboo words to know, but avoid.
Funnier the first time through, regret the $4 I spent on owning it.
Okay....so I remembered this movie to be funnier then it actually was the second time through. I still found it humorous, but really almost too simple. Maybe I was in a different mood when I watched it the first time, but the second time through Paul Blart just appeared pathetic. He is supposed to be pathetic to a point, but it almost goes overboard. The first time through I was rooting for him to succeed. The second time throught I actually thought the girl he is trying to court is actually better off without him in his life. I really like Kevin James...really don't want to be too hard on him...but this movie really is too simple to recommend. The fight scenes are lame (an overweight, out of shape Paul taking out a tribe of youthful skate board types who have enough energy to run a small village off of), his daughter appears to be taking care of him instead of the other way around, and the ending just leaves me kinda flat feeling. This is just an average movie...I regret the $4 I spent to own it.Read full review
Kevin James was great but dissappointed in the script
When I saw the premise of this movie, especially with Kevin James, I thought that this movie had great potential of being funny. Well I guess my expectations were a little too high. Mall Cop really let me down.
Paul Blart (Kevin James) wants to become a real cop but takes his job as a security guard at the burlington mall seriously. They go to great lengths to show how depressed and hopeless he is. As he is making his rounds he sees Amy (Jayma Mays) and relizes, since he saw her smile at him, that she is the one. Blart with his low self esteem tries to reel her in but messes that up like everything else. Then an organized group of thugs take over the mall and Blart is the only one in the mall to stop them. This is the perfect chance for Blart to prove his love for Amy and show everyone that he isn't so worthless.
The acting wasn't bad, the direction was okay but the problem in this movie was the script. The writers had so much to work with in this movie, yet they failed at producing gut busting humor. There was a lot of long periods of no laughs at all. I kept thinking that okay, its going to get funny now yet it never comes.
Kevin James did a great job, he did what he could with the script. If it was anyone else I personally think that this movie would have not been green lit. Paul Blart: Mall Cop is worth watching. Give it a try, but dont get your hopes to high.Read full review
