I picked up a couple of these mics at a very good price on ebay. The classic version looks really nice and is rather weighty in your hand. I really like the textured paint on these mics too. In use, they have reasonably low handling noise. But what's really nice is that the PL-80c is the first and only mic I have ever owned that needs absolutely no EQ for a live performance. I usually roll off some low end to compensate for close proximity and add some high end to cut through the mix. With this mic, I can leave the channel EQ completely flat and it's like I have dialled in my favourite EQ curve already. The PL-80c does suffer from plosives a little more than some mics I have owned, but with proper technique, this is not really a problem. I bought this mic because my rode M3 didn't cut through the mix on stage. The EV PL80 leaves most of your voice intact and is more precise than the SM58. It it way better than the Behringer, it really lets you use it as an instrument: by changing the angle and distance you can control the sound. It has to be responsive, as a pianist i must feel it working as I'm sort of strapped in my position. It may be a little boomy when close and straight in but that could be my PA. It has improved my singing technique.
This is a reboot of the classic PL80 mic from the 80s. Original has Al-ni-co and this reboot was given a Neodymium magnet by EV. I have both versions and the former is darker/heavier sounding vs. the focused-yet-still-not-harsh-sound of the latter. May or may not work as the output is always timbre (of the artist) dependent. I'm keeping mine copy of both.
