Barbara Vine doesn't just write mysteries well. She simply writes well. Inspector Wexford, as a young police officer, senses that there is a murderer on the loose, but over the years is unable to prove the guilt of an individual named Targo. As Wexford muses about the past, we learn more about him not just as a police officer, but as a man. Perhaps my favorite part of this book is the title. We all have monsters in our lives, just as Wexford does. It may be the nightmare figure of childhood, or something more recent and more real. If we are lucky, we can resolve our monsters, by tucking them away in their box, or through the retribution that reaches a man like Targo, a "helpful" killer. In this excellent mystery, the always real characters and subplots fascinate and add dimension to the fabric of the writing. Always spellbinding, always suspenseful, Barbara Vine makes me wish there were more pages in the book. A recommended good read from a reviewer who reads at least a book a week, and only reviews a few that really deserve merit.Read full review
