SynopsisDiscusses the crime and corruption that affected Albany, NY during the decade of American Prohibition, and examines the subsequent impact on the community., The story begins in 1919, when the city of Albany made an effort to deal with increasing vice activities by getting the "undesireables" out of town. This effort fails with the enactment of Prohibition in 1920, and Albany quickly becomes an important smuggling and bootlegging stop. Organized crime soon became a serious problem throughout the 20's and into the 30's, even more so with increased political and legal corruption. Dry raids, opium dens, speakeasies, and gambling rings dotted the city streets and houses. Infamous New York City mobster, Legs Diamond, was murdered while "hiding out" in Albany. The book also examines the social impact the crime and corruption had on the city and draws parallels to modern day crime and prevention., Albany, New York, experienced massive upheaval when the Volstead Act of 1919 established Prohibition. Crime already proliferated in the capital of the Empire State, with rival political machines stooping to corruption and the mob with their heavy-handed powers of persuasion. As it did nationwide, Prohibition in Albany served merely to force alcohol-related commerce underground and lawlessness and violence to the forefront of city activity.
