Stories from James A. Michener's book, "Tales of the South Pacific" were the inspiration for "South Pacific", a stage play that eventually became a popular musical film in 1958's "South Pacific". This musical features songs that retain popularity today, like "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," and "This Was Nearly Mine." The Blu-ray disc version of "South Pacific" is a two-disc set that contains special features like a report by Diane Sawyer on a trip taken by James Michener to the islands of the "South Pacific" that inspired his original book. There are also features on the Blu-ray disc like a television tribute to Rogers and Hammerstein (the creators of the musical) that aired on television not long after the movie was released. Along with being a love story, "South Pacific" deals with the Second World War, and some of the issues (including racism and tragedy) that played a part in that conflict in the Pacific theater of the Second World War.

A Movie For All Ages
It was a timeless play on Broadway that then transitioned to an unforgettable movie. I doubt very much if young people can relate to any lyrics such as "I'm as corny as Kansas in August" or any of the other romantic songs in this musical. but I hope that they can and will. This truly is a film that can be watched by every member of the family, especially in this time of world turmoil.
