    My Second Portable Planer

I had a Delta 22-580 for 12 years and was extremely pleased with it. But, the motor quit and the part is either not available or absurdly priced. I couldn't afford to get a Powermatic this time around, so I went with the DeWalt. On the plus side, the "R" model (that just means that it's factory refurbished) is a really good deal. Several reviewers have pointed out that the packaging is inadequate, but mine only had to travel about 100 miles vis UPS, so it arrived in really good shape. That said, Chang (the manufacturer that does most of Stanley Black and Decker's power tools) really should bolt it to a small pallet and then cover it with a box that is heavier than the one they use. I got mine from CPO and they said it would come from Georgia. However, UPS tracking shows that it came from not that far away from me in Seattle, which was lucky for me. The Delta was really good at letting you control planning thickness, but I think the DeWalt may be a little better. Also, the DeWalt's four lead screws that control the head positioning are set further apart than any other portable, which makes it a lot more stable. You almost have to induce snipe deliberately, even if you don't install the optional folding table extensions. I've got them on mine and I do recommend them. Another strong positive is the fan on the dust collector, which is very strong. You do not want to use it directly into a 2" shop vac. A big 4" dust collector is the way to go, but if you do use a shop vac, get one of those intermediate chip and dust separators like Rockler sells, otherwise you'll overwhelm the vac. I had the stand for my Delta, which is identical to the one for the DeWalt except for where the pre-drilled holes are located. So I just took off the Delta and mounted the DeWalt and it works great. The third planning knife is a good improvement over the two knife models. If you plane something with this you will not need to do any sanding. Also, the switch is a very clever and simplified design that is probably the nicest power tools safety switch design that I've seen. You will definitely like it. Ok, those are the positives. On the cautionary side, the exit point for the power cord is on the back or board exit side of the planer head. That's really dumb and annoying. It should be on one of the sides. So you will have to be careful to tape or otherwise secure the cord so it doesn't accidentally get caught by a board coming out. Similarly, the chip exhaust port is dead center on the back side of the planer head and the DeWalt does not have a fitting like the Delta had to angle it off to the side for the hose attachment. So, just as with the power cord you need to carefully secure your dust collection hose up out of the way of the board exit path. The final negative is that every photo I have seen online of the optional stand shows the pedal and lift caster mounted backward with it impossibly positioned inside the stand. That's just dumb. Make sure you mount it correctly on the outside where it belongs if you buy the stand. Like I said, I have the stand and I do like it. On the neutral side of review items or just informational, if you have never used one of these portable planers before, you will want to make sure that you have your planer and your dust collection system on separate circuits. When both motors are running, in addition to all of the noise they make, they draw a lot of power. If I forget and accidentally plug them into the same 20amp circuit and start doing a bunch of hardwood, they will definitely trip the breaker. Also, stop by the chainsaw department of your local equipment or hardware store and get a really good pair of ear protectors. I mean it when I say the two motors running together make a lot of noise. Overall, this is probably the best of the small portable planers on the market at the moment. Obviously it is not in the same league as a Powermatic, but it can be had for about 1/3rd or less of the price of a Powermatic, so for occasional work in a non-production shop this is a darned good planer for the money.

    DEwalt RECONDITIONED planer

Damned heavy unit, best to put it on table or work bench with wheels to move it. Fairly good condition for a RECONDITIONED unit. I think they forgot to check the blades, first cut on pine I noticed a very small but noticeable ridge in the finish on the board. It was packaged very well.

  • Best Planer for the features.

Watched this planer in use and decided it was a tool I needed in my shop. The ease of adjustments and stops is what I was looking for and expected. The best feature is the chip blower that I can direct with a hose into my dust collection system. Dewalt gave a lot of good thought into this planer.

  • Nice compact planer

First time owning a planer and this one gets the job done fantastically. The thickness gauge could be better but I'll get used to it. I would buy this again

  • Cheaper then cregslist

It was definitely larger that I thought it would be but it works amazingly. All the knifes were new and no dust or signs of use. It was missing one of the black caps on one of the four corners. But if I were to do it all again I would buy two, one for me and one for my close friend since it is that amazing.

  • Good planer

Nice planer. Upgraded from the 12 in for the extra stability. Gave it a 4 because for the money dewalt should include infeed and outfeed tables.
