Like all operas this has it's pluses and minuses. The pluses? Eleanor Steber, Astrid Varnay and Hermann Uhde. Holy cow, can they sing! The minuses? Windgassen is not a very lyrical Lohengrin even if this role should have been a natural for him. Josef Griendl is a little rough for the role of the King but he sings with commitment and grace. Conducting could have been a little more exciting but Clemens Krauss was probably not available nor Herbert von Karajan. Stage noises not very intrusive. But i will definitely give this recording repeated listening.
