    Old School Shave

I have had trouble with the newer products drying to fast on the face, before the first time over is finished. I think the new products focus too much on oils, fragrance, and emollients and not enough on hydration. I ordered and tried Williams, something I had used for many years as a barber, and the drying issue was solved. Today they call it wet shaving. The truth is the lather has to remain moist until the barber finishes the shave. If not, the barber has to re-hydrate and re-lather to continue shaving. The Williams mug soap is really good at lasting through the shave.

  • Top critical review

It's ok. Not the best, but useable.

This soap has changed formulas, from the old original stuff. It's pretty hard to get the right water mixture with the soap to create a lather that will last and not just be all air and dissipate away. Get it right, it's good soap. But you may find yourself spending a lot of time trying to create a usable lather.. arko is much better, way easier to use and similar scents.

  • First soap ever

This is the first shaving soap I ever used, so I can only compare it against canned foam/gel and cream tubes. I tried building a lather with a boar brush and a wooden cup and didn't have a lot of trouble getting decent quality lather. I'm sure more experienced users will get a nice, thick lather out of it. The lather seemed long lasting and more moisturizing than my favorite cream tube (Palmolive Sensitive). By the end of the shave, my skin still felt quite comfortable and fresh (not always the case with the cream tube). The scent (although very subjective and personal) feels very clean and fresh, reminding me of a citrus-y smell (lemon balm comes to mind). It's not overpowering: my wife could barely smell it while I was shaving, although I could feel its fragrance throughout the shave (and I liked it). I'm waiting to try an Arko shaving soap so I can compare different soaps, but so far I'm very happy with the Williams. Look forward to using it again! --------------------------------------- UPDATE: I can now compare the Williams soap to an Arko soap. It's a *lot* easier to get a good lather from the Arko soap. I find myself coming back to the Arko soap, rather than the Williams (not only because it's harder to create a good lather, but because it dries a lot quicker than the Arko). With that in mind, I won't be purchasing a new Williams soap when my current one is done. It does look nice and vintage, though. So I have no regrets on my purchase.

  • Old time classic

This is the last of the dying bread of affordable quality tallow based shaving creams. I would stock up on this stuff. Has a very nice scent. Can be a little difficult to get a good working lather on this that doesn't evaporate on your face too quickly. I'm sure its just me or my hard water. Great stuff, get it while its cheap. I bought a six pack. Once they stop making this, you have your choice of the myriad of $100 dollar an ounce stuff that is no different than this stuff except for maybe the scent..

  • williams

For the money this is the best shaving soap I've used. Williams has been making this forever. I've tried other higher prices shaving soaps, they don't last any longer or give you better shaves. I've been using shaving soap for almost 30 years, and I always choose Williams as I think its the best value. Plus it's made by the family who brought us the great governor of Michigan, G. Mennan "Soapy" Williams. I buy this in bulk and it lasts forever. No better bang for the buck.

  • Great Product - Great Delivery - No Need to buy the High Dollar Soaps

Most of us overpay on this basic product and I was concerned it would not be a good quality, long lasting product. Well, the soap puck is slightly less width in diameter than some, but that made it easier to fit my nice wood bowl. It also has a slightly lower width which also made it fit nicely. Any 3.5 to 5 inch bowl or cup will work. I like the product. It is a soft soap that foams up quickly and provides a clean shave. The scent is not strong nor is it perfume like. I like that buying five at a time saved me the shipping on each soap puck and I am glad I will not have to go shopping again for soap pucks for probably three to four years. So, great product, great price AND it came from this vendor in a very timely fashion.

  • The Best soap I have ever used and smells awesome.

This is the best shaving soap I have ever used. The razor just glides across the skin without pulling or snagging. And it smells great, It kinda reminds me of the smell of a brand new leather saddle.

  • Long time user of an economical product.

I've been using this brand of shaving soap since 1977. Works great and is a much better value than canned, pressurized foam shaving cream!!

  • Best Find

Was exactly what I was looking for, my man loves this brand. Shipped and arrived very quickly especially considering COVID has the postal system so behind. I will definitely be purchasing from them again.

  • A old style classic shaving soap.

Ever since i started traditional wet shaving i've been intrigued by williams mug shaving soap..It's fragrance doesn't get top marks, which to my nose has a pleasant clean lemony scent, which some won't like, but it's a inexpensive soap, i don't expect a luxurious scent for what it costs, for me personally the fragrance of a shaving soap isn't really that important,it's shaving performance is, Williams, Arko, Derby, Palmolive arn't the best smelling soaps, i'll agree, but these in-expensive soaps provide a superb lather at a very reasonable price, which can match shaving soaps & creams 3 times the price these in-expensive old school classics have been around for a long time, which tells me, that they must be good,as people are still buying them, if not the makers of these soaps would no longer be producing them. I basically treat it the same as i do with any hard shaving soap, the only difference slight difference is i bloom it in 'very hot water', for 10 minutes, after it's been bloomed,i apply the bloom water to my face then rub the puck directly into my stubble,'like a shave stick,'then vigorously build up a lather on my face, with my wet brush until i get the lather consistancy i like, adding water to the tips of the brush in between each pass. ..This soap is a thirsty one!, so i add more water than usual, than i would when mixing other soaps. The lather is very foamy at first, but i've learnt not to stop at the foamy stage and Continue working with it and the result is a very nice reasonably slick lather, it does takes a little longer to get a good lather than it would with other soaps,i also add more water than i would , with it been a thirsty soap, one thing i do like about williams, is it's slickness, the lather thickness isn't a 'Full On' Santa Claus Beard' thickness, but it's slickness, performance and wonderful post shave feeling makes up for that.. 'As stated on the side of the box, 'it does not dry on your face, but leaves skin soft and smooth'.I recommend you give this classic soap a try out.A happy buyer.
