About this product

Product Information

After helping liberate France in World War II, a group of African soldiers is stationed in a camp in Dakar where the color of their skin trumps the stripes on their uniforms. Forced once more to suffer the indignities of racism, the soldiers are put on road to rebellion--with tragic consequences. This methodical drama from Senegalese master Ousmane Sembene is an impassioned rebuke to colonialism.

  • More Than Just A Film

For anyone aware of his work, Ousmane Sembene's films are most often about illustrating a way of thinking and life from a Black African (and often Black in general) perspective. As they pose more of a microcosm and mirror of social expression than average movie fare, trying any of Sembene's movies before investing in one to ensure it actually represents the experience being sought is highly recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with the Father of African Cinema. That said, Camp De Thiaroye and Moolaade are two of my favorite Sembene films.
