A simple yet complex spin on 'the word'. Any fan of Natalie Merchant, 10,000 Maniacs, or poetry should give this one an open ear. This body of work follows a different path than her recent known works, such as "In My Tribe" or "Tigerlily", but must equally be praised and applauded for its content and approach. Through this album, Merchant breathes life into each poem and the poet's life, arranging and producing the album with the backing of over 100 musicians from various lands. Some stand-out tracks are "The Land of Nod", "If No One Ever Marries Me", "The Janitor's Boy" (lovely trumpeting courtesy of Wynton Marsalis) and "Spring and Fall: To a Young Child". Easily an artistic masterpiece, and an enriching educational experience for the listener.Read full review
I was afraid that Natalie Merchant's new album would be slow and boring. I weighed that against my love of her voice. I bought it and my love of her voice proved correct. The music is intricate and moving; her voice weaves in and out of the multitude of other instruments and artists to create a beautiful sound. Some might be put off by the slow pace of many of the numbers, but I found the cd quite involving. If you love Natalie's voice, this is a must have.
