This is an excellent compilation of official U.S. military and government films about the Vietnam War. All the films on these discs are freely available and are individually public domain from places like the National Archives. And one can spend hours finding and copying these films at the various govt. agencies which archive them or buy 23 hours of films on this 4 disc set for less than the price of what some other sellers charging for just a couple of these films. The resolution isn't great but it's a cheap and convenient way to view these historic and important films. As the son of a Vietnam Vet who is currently working on a documentary about my dad's unit during the war I'm thankful that compilations like this one are around. I can view these films for very little money and then request better copies from the various agencies for my own production. Sure these are the point of view the government wanted to present but that in no way takes away from the value of this archival footage if one views the films as just one point of view: the government's. One needs to talk to actual veterans, read books written by the Veterans and see other documentaries to get the fuller understanding of what was a more complicated, and misunderstood war than what was presented forty years ago and is still being presented in many cases. All these years later, the war in what the soldiers came to call "The Nam" is influencing how the U.S. fights wars now in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. These films are a pretty good insight into official U.S. military thought back then if anything. Lastly, these films were never meant to be objective and this is simply a compilation of the films as they were made back then.Read full review
Very long. It's a little too much talking and explanation from the simple definition instead of the War itself. But it's okay. I thought was complete, but it's not...It's just focus on too much about American side instead of Vietnamese Soldier and Vietnamese Government. How South Vietnamese Government works, this video doesn't say. It has a part talk about the North Government got alot of help from China. The proof is the chinese language engrave into the weapons.
A lengthy compilation of VietNam-era DOD films -- self-laudatory and boring. Evidently these were produced in an effort to convince the American public that US military people were heroes, giving life-saving and community betterment social services to the VietNamese people, while incidentally pounding a vicious enemy to bits. This was a key part of the government's effort to popularize a very unpopular war, and to justify spending $600 million per week and losing thousands of lives annually. The series gives little insight into the causes fo the war, the actual suffering of our troops, the military strategies employed, or the errors which the US made. One gets no insight into history from these films. Worst of all, these films trivialize the war, making it seem like field exercises.Read full review

Being a person who loves War History, this set of DVD's did not meet my satisfaction. The series is filled with Propaganda US Armed Service's short films about the war which does nothing to explain the war objectively. Perhaps the author should take a lesson or two from other War Historic Documentary Film Series which deals with the true purpose of why the vietnam war took place. Its ironic that other nations always seem to be willing to help the French, but the favor is not always returned.
This is an excellent production on the Vietnam War
