  • Best iPad keyboard, if that's all you need

It's really well constructed and has a thoughtful key layout with iPad-specific function keys. It's probably the best product for an almost-authentic iPad-as-laptop experience. The hinges are great. They hold the iPad steady at any viewing angle, and it's relatively easy to get the iPad in and out of the clips. The keyboard is heavy enough to give a comfortable lap-typing experience. And it looks pretty sweet closed up in a clamshell with that perfect fit and color match. I wish it was a little easier to open from that closed clamshell. The MacBook-like thumb tab for opening the "lid" is so barely there, it's completely unhelpful. Speaking of the typing experience: It's fine. The keys have a nice matte finish, which feel good but immediately show finger grease (I had to learn to ignore that). The key travel and bounce is comfortable. The layout is very slightly cramped, but I adjusted to it easily. The palms of my hands rested on the edge of the keyboard, which is sharp enough to be a little uncomfortable. But again, that was pretty easy to get used to. So why am I sending mine back? As I heavy laptop user, the lack of a trackpad became an insurmountable annoyance. Having to constantly touch the screen to navigate, especially when trying to go back and forth between apps, was aggravating. Reaching the apps in the dock was also awkward. Pulling up the dock is difficult with the swipe-up gesture, since the back edge of the keyboard is right there, and even reaching your finger down into the corner to touch or drag the dock apps feels weird. Yes, there is a keyboard shortcut to bring up the dock, but it's not really a one-handed gesture. So if your hand is hovering around the screen and you want to access the dock, you have to take your hand away from the screen, perform the keyboard shortcut, and then go back in with your hand to do the awkward dock reach. It seems petty, but it really started grating on me over time. And of course, when doing heavy typing, having to reach up to select text or drag the cursor around is, well, a drag. If you only use this keyboard when sitting at a desk with a bluetooth mouse (using Apple's new mouse support), it would probably be a better experience. But most of this is not Brydge's problem. Apple has been very slow in adopting system cursor and keyboard support for the iPad. Brydge made a really good iPad keyboard. In fact it's probably the best iPad keyboard, if a keyboard is all you need. But I realized that I need a better experience interacting with the iPad when it's attached to a keyboard. Frankly, I need a trackpad...with Apple's multi-touch gesture support. It's so obvious: two-finger scroll, four-finger swipe between full-screen apps, app expose, pinches and zooms, etc. But alas, such a product doesn't exist...yet. When I took the iPad out again, after several days, and held it in my hand, navigating it with my fingers, I realized how this device was meant to be experienced. For me, for now, it's going to remain a touch-and-pencil device.

  • Best iPad Keyboard

Better than Apple keyboard (and less expensive). Great feel, backlit keys, fits iPad perfectly. Hinges allow any viewing angle you want. Gives as close to a laptop experience as you'll find with a tablet.
