Updated picture and remastered sound are very good. However, the "space" scenes outside the ship are very poor. BIG DISAPPIOINTMENT HERE! I expected to see scenes like in the newer Star Trek TV series (NX Gen, DS9, Enterprise); real motion picture scenes. What you get here are LOUSY VIDEO GAME GRAPHICS. Switching between motion picture and this computer generated junk is really annoying. Episodes which feature a lot of scenes outside the ship such as "The Doomsday Machine" really suffer. This is not being "purist", it just looks ridiculous. Not up to Star Trek standards. The original "space" scenes, even with 1960's tech are way better. If this is all the better they could do, they should have left it as it was originally. The disk labels are limited to small circles in the center of the disk, with no room for info of what episodes are on the disk (you have to refer to plastic cards, which don't describe the episodes either). The original 2004 DVD set had full episode labels on the disk, and a booklet which described each episode. This is progress? This is nothing against the vendor, they had no control over this.Read full review
I wasn’t particularly interested when they remastered Star Wars. But this show, because of all its brilliance and put it towards people and the visionary way it was so ahead of the future, deserved an upgrade and enhancement. It clearly makes a lot of the 1960s playacting drama go away and the real science fiction shine.

Okay, me... long-time Trekker, I collect ST toys & books & Dickel bottles BUT... I've never owned any Trek Original Series on any form, Beta, VHS or disc. Until now. And I'm glad I waited and didn't get stuck with 79 separate VHS's in clamshells! You'd think I'd be a purist and all a-gripin' about the Remastering, but nope. I love it! Here's what the naysayers are missing in their reviews. Of course Star Trek would be easy to preserve and clean up, it always looked great, it was a vibrant, colorful show. But no one probably thought that it would get "tampered with" à la Star Wars. Fans hate to point out weaknesses in the things we revere, but face it, the stock shots of the same Enterprise model crudely super-imposed over the same planet footage, it was just jarring transition-wise. The old-fashioned dials are turned into more futuristic read-outs, the Gorn blinks, the matte paintings are re-done more realistically, the phaser beams colors are in sync. The special features tell you that they basically used the same planet shot multiple times, just tinted it different colors. Let's face it, the budget went into Janice Rand's basket-weave hairdo, there wasn't much left over for FX. But the new exteriors and bridge viewscreen shots aren't jarring like you might expect, in fact they flow with the original series footage better than ever. The ships don't jerk, they don't get translucent, but somehow they made the CGI a bit aged to fit in with the rest of the film stock. It's only when you first start watching that you anticipate the CGI and are more concious of it, after awhile you forget about it at all. There's a great side-by-side comparison at the "Star Trek" website, just search for "Star Trek comparison remastered". So basically, that's how I feel about THAT! Nyah! Okay, the dvd packaging? Feh! It's SO bad that I find it funny now, every time I open the cases wondering how anyone could've seriously thought this was aesthetically-pleasing or convenient presentation. Unmarked dvd discs, a big 10-disc plastic case in a paper box in a plastic hinged box and the square cards with each episode listed on them. My cards fell out today when I tilted the box to pull the unweildy 10-cd plastic case out. Ugh. Anyway, so bad it's funny, at least I get a little laugh out of it! That's how I put a positive spin on things I guess. Buy it. NOW!!! And live long & prosper.Read full review
What more can one say about a classic series like the original "Star Trek"? NBC had something special when this program first aired on that network from 1966 to 1969. Viewers everywhere were captivated by the adventures of Capt. James Kirk (William Shatner), Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelly), Mr. "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), helmsman Lt. Sulu (George Tekai), Ensign Chekov (Walter Koenig), and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Included in this set are all 80 original episodes presented in the original order of broadcast. Even better is the fact that every episode has been restored and remastered for an optimal viewing experience. This includes both crystal clear audio sound and enhanced visuals. Who could ever forget Kirk's opening dialogue that started each episode? "Space...The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before!" The series is set in the 23rd century where Earth has survived World War III then moved on to explore the stars. Although this series only lasted for 3 seasons, it paved the way for the subsequent sequel series that followed (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise). Brought to you in a brilliant remastered edition, this is the original Star Trek like you’ve never seen it before!Read full review
You don't have to be a sci-fi lover to enjoy the Star Trek original series. Although I've been a fan since the early 80s, I only recently purchased all three seasons after finding a great price on eBay. I couldn't be happier. The video and audio quality is good and perfect for the notebook/travel viewing that I do frequently. I have always believed I've seen every episode and so far I haven't found any surprises. I also have the original Battlestar Galactica series (and just purchased the new one as well). The special effects of BG is better if only because of the improved technology that was available. But I still find that I prefer Capt. Kirk and company. So if you've been sitting on the fence, go ahead and take the plunge. You won't regret it!
I was never a fan of Star Trek. As a teenager when the branch off series were still on tv I had no interest in them, laughing them off as science fiction fare for geeks. And then I found out that my husband (my mere boyfriend at the time) was a closet Trekker-- yes, Trekker, and not "Trekkie". It turns out that Seven of Nine had lured him in with her skintight body suit but that's another story entirely. The point was that I was uninterested until something strange happened. I went out with a friend of mine to the movies only to discover that the movie we'd wanted to see was sold out. Our alternative was the Star Trek reboot by J.J. Abrams. Seeing as we already had the popcorn and soda we decided we'd give it a shot. The cast, the script, the effects, all of it worked a spell on me and planted a seed. I was curious to know more about the universe, curious to discover why some of the die hard fans were up in arms about the newest movie while others were embracing it. This is where my purchase of TOS comes in. The show was campy, sometimes badly acted on the part of Mr. Shatner (which oddly enough lends to its appeal) and I think I might be the slightest bit in love with Mr. Deforest Kelley. The blend of comedy and "drama" for the serious situations is superb. There are jokes that adults of any generation can appreciate while still being family friendly enough for children to enjoy as well. It's a pleasant alternative to the sometimes questionable material on T.V. today and a nice change of pace from something like the Disney channel. Star Trek opened a lot of doors in terms of genre and ideas, and it's funny to see how the "future" and its events were viewed then. I will shamelessly admit that I'm now a full blown Trekker after being exposed to TOS, and that I've introduced it to the next generation as well. You have to marvel at anything that holds the kind of staying power that Star Trek has. It's more popular than ever more than FORTY YEARS after its initial release. The Trek world isn't just for "geeks" anymore, its for anyone that wants a little levity and imagination in their life.Read full review
I am a kid of the 60s and Star Trek is one of the best things I remember about it (okay, in reruns, but still). ST-TOS was the first of its kind in presenting a hopeful future for us in that we could travel to explore and boldly seek out new life, new civilizations. Amazing that it has lasted this long! These DVDs show the series as it was originally presented, bad special effects, bad sound effects and all. I still love it.
The dvd containers take a bit of getting used to, but the space savings is good. If you have a standard system as opposed to high definition(HD), you need to reed carefully as one side of each disk is standard and the other HD. The HD wont play in standard equipment perhaps leaving one to belive the disks do not work. It seems, at least on mine, spanish subtitles allways pop on. The are no english subtitle options. I have encountered no other issues at this time and would recommend this to anyone.
Don't confuse this collection with the other, older box sets that some sellers are trying to unload. (Also, beware of sellers pushing European copies, which may not work on North American players.) These are the classic Star Trek episodes that have been enhanced with high-def transfer and upgraded special effects. They will play on standard DVD or HD-DVD players, but not Blu-Ray. Now, some Trek purists may not like the fact that the original optical effects have been replaced, but let's face it: While they were good by 1960's standards, they look kind of cheesy today. I think the people who created the upgrades have shown respect for the original vision and complimented the shows with qualities that were unobtainable to the original production team. I've been a fan since the original broadcasts of these programs, but I'm glad I waited until now to buy the entire series. This is the keeper!Read full review
For the most part, I grew up watching the Next Generation and I am really excited about the upcoming 2009 Star Trek movie. I wanted to watch the series to enhance that experience. I am half way through the series and I love it. The newly added CGI is not overly done, but truly enhances the atmosphere. The writing for this series was truly excellent, not relying on special effects like much of today's Sci-Fi. The quality of the remastering for the first season is tremendous. I am half way through the second season and I can honestly say that it feels like a lot less effort went into cleaning up the film (almost like it was rushed). On top of that they cramped 4 episodes on to a disc as opposed to 3 in the first season. Overall, this is still an excellent series and I am so glad that I broke down and bought it.Read full review
