I’ve owned and used the RME Fireface 800 since it came out around 2004. This unit still stacks up very well against brand new technology. Excellent A/D converters, the full and generous array of in/out, rock solid clock and drivers (all the way through windows 10 and latest iOS ) Totalmix, which at first seems slightly awkward, very quickly makes sense to the point it schools you on what real audio engineering is, now I don’t want to work with anything else. Never a hiccup, crash, or single issue...ever, from the moment I set it up to today. Round trip latency of 7ms at 96K? That’s better than some cutting edge new USB3 interfaces on a “dated and dying” FireWire protocol. But with infinite routing, loop back per channel, stand alone and direct monitoring, who cares about latency anyway? Even has midi. Onboard preamps may not be burr brown warm and magically colored, but they are clean, flat, and honest to whatever you plug in. Quite possibly the best all purpose value/feature rich audio interface in recorded history so far, the benchmark was set high by RME with this one. A few are finally reaching this all around quality of A/D and features, maybe a couple come close to matching it in terms of solid plug and play reliability on pretty much any system. Few can touch it, let alone surpass it (one might be the RME successor) even 14 years later. This product is the real thing. I can't say enough about it. I purchased this item because I wanted great pre's and AD/DA. I also wanted a stable recording platform and from experience I have found that other manufactures don't really care about comparability or stable drivers. After beating my head against the wall over other interface's (specifically presonus)I came to the conclusion that you get what you pay for. You will pay more for the fireface 800 or any RME product but it is worth it. You can't go wrong with this product. Do yourself a favor and step away from the flooded market of cheap, mass produced interfaces and go with a quality product, you will thank yourself later when you are recording great sounding music and not searching through forums trying to find answers to problems other manufactures sold you. The only Con I would say is that there is a fairly steep learning curve to the routing software. It is complicated stuff and requires a good amount of knowledge about signal flow and routing, but thankfully RME wrote a great manual and supplied the user with some great built in presets that will get you up and running in no time. Also if you are using a PC(like me), it will pay off big time if you have a firewire chipset that has been recommended by RME. On there web site go to support then go to tech info. Under the firewire category read the article about Firewire 800 hardware-comparability problems. I bought the LaCie firewire 800 PCI card because RME specifically recommends it. You can find it for around $50. I installed it and it automatically just worked, no drivers or anything. If you do not have a chipset that works well with the fireface 800 you are most likely going to run into problems. Been a big fan of RME since I bought my DIGI 9652 maybe 10 years ago. Vista forced me to upgrade and boy am I happy. I have 2 of the FF 800s. That is 24 analog ins (8 on mic pres) 16 outs, plus 32 channels of ADAT Light Pipe. This thing is hooked up to my D8B, so I effectively have 48 analog ins right now, plus a light pipe to spare. MIDI, SPDIF... Low latency operation. Simple plug and play interface. Can run up to 3 of these monsters. I am planning on swapping my D8B towards a Toft somewhere down the line. I am going to need one more FF800.
By far the best audio interface ever made. I own two of them (one for home studio use, and one for use in my live rig.) I have used almost every other brand in existence. Only RME offers top quality converters and rock solid drivers, as well as legendary build quality.
Fortunately, and for three reasons, I didn't have to guess about this unit. 1) I have used an old 8 I/O Nuendo interface for a few years and discovered It was built by RME. 2) I use a 9652 for my Cubase interface 3) We have 3 FF800s at the job I presently do and I have grown to appreciate the quality and versatility.., so I bought one.it's a "No Brainer" these things work really, really well and soumd great. I looked for used as my budget was getting thin this year and it's worth every penny I scraped together, and then some.
A most excellent German-built interface. Some of the best A/D, D/A converters around. Super clean, uncolored Mic preamps. Very quiet signal paths. Most importantly: The unit itself operates silently, I have it in a rack right in front of me. Rear connections are all TRS/Balanced.
