I raise mid size and large domesticated ducks, and these trays work well for their eggs. I do not fill the outside rows. Keep in mind that if you're using these for eggs, you'll need to use two trays - one to set the eggs in and one on the top. I haven't stacked more than one. I would probably use a different type of tray, possibly plastic, if I were to create stacks.
