Hahaha not really, but I love the sound of this thing. The Tesla ec88 is nice. I bought a tungsram and I don’t know I feel about it yet in comparison. This mic however is awesome. I love the sound quality. I however am a techy and I’m dying to mod this thing when the time comes. Great mic for the right price. I got mine for like 333 dollars. Can’t beat that:

My initial tests of the Rode NTK showed that it was a bright microphone that accentuated sibilance, which I expected. This is OK since I intend to mod this mike with a new NOS tube and a microphone-parts RK-12 capsule. This mike is a great mod platform since it is well built with top quality components. According to a couple of sources, with the new capsule and tube, it is a killer microphone.

This new mic I bought is going into my arsenal of great gear I have. Perfect for voices over and singing voices with warm sound and large diaphragm which handle the low end very well. It is also a great mic for any instrument, especially Acoustic Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Violin etc...A must have in any studio setup....

I've used the Manley "red" mic, numerous AKG C414's, other Rode's mics like the NT1,2 and 3, Neumann U87, Grooove Tubes Md1b, At 4050's, Km148 and others. I purchased this mic primarily as a vocal mic fo a demo studio. Even though it's a "demo" studio, I still wanted clean, accurate representations of whoever was spending their money. This mic definitely does that. It's very clean, transparent and the vocal sounds just like the person. It doesn't color noticably and any slight warmth it might add will usually be absorbed during your mixdown or overall mastering. Absolutely no reason to avoid this mic. This mic comes with it's own power supply which works just fine on it's own. It has no knobs on it but it does power up the mic with no added noise. When I was testing it for noise, I decided to A/B it on my recorder. I ran it for 30 seconds dry and direct, then on another channel I ran it through a cheap Behringer 2-channel MPA. Yes, I do have APS and Buzz Audio preamps I could have used... It actually got better! A little bit better high end range and more definition on the bottom end. I was more impressed with the Behringer than the mic! For the money the Rode NTK it's one of the best buys out there. One thing to remember, all vocals are the different. What works with your voice may not be the best choice for the next singer. If your budget is limited, try to build an arsenal of at least 2-3 mics that can be swapped out to find the right fit. Butch Vig, producer and drummer for Garbage, recorded one of Madonna's albums using a SM58 on her vocals.Read full review
