I bought this External HD to load all my personal files, music and other, on my computer at work. It is plug and play and was recognized without problems any time I decided to connect it to the PC. I run windows XP. The hard drive is connected through 2 separate USB ports. I think one is for data and the other one is used to supply the unit. The cable provided has one connector that goes to the HD and two USB connectors that goe to the PC. The 2 USB ports on the PC must be reasonably close to each other as the provided cable only allow 4 inch between each other. My wife has a netbook and there are not two consecutive USB ports on it. By plugging only one of the USB port to the PC, the HD does not seem to mind and works fine. I did not rate the purchase as "Excellent" simply because in a few situations, I could not release the HD from the USB connection. (Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the bottom right corner, with the little green arrow in the Windows screen). I unplugged it anyway and it has never damaged anything so far. I did not have any application ON, that could use the HD during this operation. One other comment: while connected to the PC, the HD is always ON and always spins. it never goes to sleep. I hope the lifetime will not be shorted because of this. As a conclusion, I would strongly recommend this purchase, but would recommend also some kind of backup, for your super critical data, files, pictures etc... The size is very small, very portable (bigger than a SD card or a USB falsh drive, but with a lot more space in it!).Read full review
In general these are good drives. What you should know is that they come in different flavors. Just like a Chevy Camero could have a six cylinder or 2 different sizes of a V8, so the same is true with these Scorpio Drives. It does not matter for general purpose use which you buy but if you are into better performance you should check out the specifications on WD's website. This model is rated at 150 mbs and has an 8 meg buffer. There are also drives with just a 2 meg buffer. The Scorpio BLUE is the faster SATA (II) drive at 300 mbs. So if your working on large files and moving a lot of data, this is the way to go. For the average user, it would be a waste to go with the faster transfer speed. Web browsing, email and spreadsheets have no need for performance but real-time gaming is another story. I have 2 drives, One [the slow one] is running Vista Ultimate on a Dell Latitude with 4 Gigs of ram. The other drive has XP Pro. Lots of ram makes the difference. 2 Gigs is the minimum to make things work well. With only 1 gig, there is a lot of swap file activity and that is ok for spreadsheets and word processing but heavy Web applications get jittery. Small drives are fine unless you want to load up lots of videos. For video a high speed drive is recommended.Read full review

I bought this item in order to have a portable hard drive. so far it has worked great, and it even had more memory than my computers hard drive. No problems have happen so i believe it will be durable. It's small size is grate to just carry on a pocket, although it be best not to unless it would be in a case.
