I bought the Bernina 1000 Special because it seemed similar to the Bernina 1006 (the model I was really looking for) but in the process I found out a couple of things. The 1000 Special uses a different (narrower) bobbin. This was disappointing because I also have a Bernina 350PE and I thought they'd use the same bobbin type... but no. However, I came to like the machine anyway because it sews very nicely and was easy to use. Another reviewer complained that "the bobbin loops"... well, yes, because the 1000 Special uses a rotary (looping) bobbin action, whereas the 1006 uses an oscillating bobbin action. I can't see much difference in the sewing results but they will look different when you watch how they perform. This is not a fault or a defect, in fact, I've been told that the 1000 Special was made as a prototype to test the rotary bobbin system - the same system that is now used in many of the upper level Berninas. Overall, I'm very happy with this machine, but I wish I didn't have to buy completely different bobbins for it.Read full review

The machine itself looks good but the bobbin is looping. The hand wheel seems a little tight. So I was a little disappointed as I was hoping it was going to sew well. I have 1010 and I bought it new about 35 years ago and it is worn out . I loved it and I thought this one looked so similar it would sew as well as mine did and it didn’t.
