I believe that Sony has a better product than the others. I noticed on the ebay auctions that they are about 3 - 1 in quantity. So, it must be that they have been a very successful product. Trying to find a used VCR combination disc player is somewhat difficult. We have used this one about 3 evenings and have played some of my collection of hard to find Westerns. I have used the CD player also and find it works excellent as well. Just being an old cowboy and tighter than the bark on a tree, myself, personally would recommend the Sony players highly.

-- My disappointment is in it not having component plugs, only composite which is the "standard" level of quality picture. But then, most units never did have them since the VCR is an outdated technology. And so many of us have whole libraries of VHS tapes! I tried to enhance the quality slightly by running the "out" wires directly to the t.v., then the audio wires back to the receiver for the surround sound. Works. The unit itself is pretty good. It works forward and rewind like it should. Rewind seems to have several speeds, not sure just how to change other than enter on the control several times. I would buy another if I needed one. --

At first I was concerned about buying a used player. I am happy to say that was unfounded. This player work so well that 24 year old tapes look good enough to run through my Elgato converter and save in the digital world. Thank you. Now if I can just find the time to get all these tapes done.

I bought this because we needed one in our kitchen as the TV unit we had broke down. So we got an LCD HDTV flat screen and a separate VCR and DVD player. Panasonic TV, Sony VCR & DVD Player. We have used the VCR a couple of times for playback only for right now. It worked as expected, great. Very good picture, even when paused. It will get the "real test" this fall when the new TV show seasons begin firing up. My wife records all her favorites. The VCR was easy to hook up and then set up with the remote. I like the 'tape in unit symbol' that is displayed on the front panel. That's very handy. I mainly bought this because I didn't want any more combo units because when one part fails then you might pay big bucks to get it fixed (who does that?) or just junk the whole combo unit and go get a new one or a component setup like I did. Yes, components take more space but when a component fails you only have to replace that component (this VCR was $25). There's plenty of us out here who still use VCR's because Digital subscriber recording products are still expensive and in todays economy 'minimal is better'! The only thing I dislike about this VCR is it's size. It's big but I knew that and I doubt if a mechanical device of this quality and similar features could be made much smaller. This VCR does have a tuner inside and we had to have that of course. I saw many DVD/VCR combo units in Target, Wal-Mart, HH Greg, etc. but none of them had tuners. Too bad these stores are not serving the entire buying public. I know one sale they didn't get. Thanks to my Ebay merchant who sold me her slightly used tobacco/pet free Sony VCR. We're happy and if you buy this model you will be too. Oh yea, the DVD player is a Sony too. Good stuff!Read full review
Easy to operate, great picture quality (even from 30 year old VHS tapes), remote controls are easy to navigate, components are very quiet (mechanically) while in use, clear digital display showing unit functions & high quality stereo sound.

This is the ULTIMATE VCR period. Since I bought one new in 2001, I recently purchased two more used ones for both my bedrooms. I was lucky to find two in very good cosmetic shape plus they record perfectly just like when new. Eight event timer and one hour power back-up for time and event settings. This is a stereo VCR and auto clean and automatic tracking. Front jacks very handy for dubbing plus jacks in the rear. Index feature is for finding begining for recordings. Besides having three of these VCR's, I have a SONY 52 in. HD LED t.v., SONY digitial camera, SONY camcorder and SONY dvd player. These are nothing but the best!!!
It is a beautifully working piece of equipment but has a missing knob. Otherwise I am happy with it. It was a little expensive too.

Plays tapes recorded at fast speed (SP) well. Unfortunately some tapes I had recorded on another vcr at slow speed (EP) did not play well. However this is expected when playing slow recorded tapes between different model vcrs.

Bought it as a gift for my son, who is quirky and into retro stuff! :) He loves it and so far, so good.
