Hands down the best golf book I ever read. Expected a play by play of the match (and it was) but it was so much more. Thought I was petty well versed in golf history but this book opened up an era identifying the people involved and brought it to life. Tied a lot of loose ends together. The play by play would go about 4 holes then the author would spin off and give detailed biographies of not only the competitors but others who played integral parts as benefactors to both amateurs and professionals. Also... the inception and timing of the Crosby Clambake (which allowed The Match to happen) and the development of the Monterey Peninsula. In conclusion... this was the watershed moment when the Game changed from Amateurism being the highest form of competitive golf and a Pro being some "working class" bum scratching out a living. Quite a contrast with the reverence we have for today's professionals.Read full review
If you are a golf enthusiast this is a must read. If you are a sports enthusiast this is a must read. if you are a history enthusiast this is a must read. the book documents a life style that has long past. the division between amateur and professional golf at this point in time was a very small line and this book illustrates just that. The Monterey Peninsula is a golfers paradise with a rich history of celebrity and wealth. this book will inspire you to take a second look the greatest game ever played. Mark Frost does an excellent job retelling a story that has been told and retold amongst the golfing elite for decades. Enjoy!
One of the best golf books ever written. If you have any interest in golf you'll enjoy this book. Of course if you're too young to know who these people are you might need a history lesson.
