This is one of those series. You know, the ones that only get a limited run yet manage to pack itself with perfect content. The characters are all very well written and acted, you can tell that the actors are professionals, because they never sound as though they're saying lines. The score is always fitting for the scene at hand, and the jokes are witty and well thought out. I like to think of this show as a mix of The Simpsons, Frasier and Family Guy. That said, there are some plain weird moments, especially in the episode "A little deb will do you". It's still funny, but I can tell that the writers wanted to convey something that isn't quite translated into the end result. All in all though, this is one of the best comedy experiences I've had. Do yourself a favour and pick it up!Read full review
The Critic, which aired during 1994 and 1995, is based on film critic Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz) and his tv show. Jay is a single, somewhat obese, father who struggles with his career and his personal life while reviewing terrible movies. The show only aired for two seasons and never really caught on. It's a shame because Lovitz was excellent and the show was pretty funny. The movie clips, mostly fake movies of course, were usually original and off the wall. The Critic was a pretty intelligent show and was written by some of the creators of the Simpsons. The Critic Box set has the complete series, with some decent extras, and is well worth the money.
Animation is up to date characters are funny, real, and relatable, the story is consistent, and the direction seemed to be locked in. Must have been early for its' time.?

The Critic was a fantastic animated show that was done by done by many of the the people responsible for the first several years of the Simpsons on both the animation and writing sides. Many of the writers who did not come from the Simpsons went on to write for both the Simpsons and Futurama like Ken Keeler and Patric Verrone. Another writer from the Critic who has become famous since then is Judd Apatow, writer of Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin. If you are are a fan of the Simpsons you are going to love this show.
Jon Lovitz is a funny guy and The Critic was a clever show. I enjoy owning the entire series. It was a good purchase for the cost.
