I was learning how to run projectors when I ran this movie back in the 70's. Only two actors in the whole project portraying two enemy combatants at each other's throats but then find momentary peace. Marvin in real life, served as a Marine on Saipan during WWII, being shot twice and awarded the Purple Heart. For this project he brings to the screen personal battle experience which other actors could only attempt to create.

I bought this movie because I loved how two enemies came together in order to survive and how they learned to trust and depend on each other. I wish that it were like that with today's society and like them in the beginning, it was a dog eat dog world until they realized that they needed each other. I loved the movie because eventhough they had a language barrier, they learned to communicate with each other and that is something that we haven't done today. I disliked how it ended. After all the trials that they encountered and then finally learned that they were not really enemies but victims of circumstance...a war of greed, they died. Who knows who fired the mortar that killed them, which is symbolic in today's wars...no one admits who fired the mortar that killed unless that person or organization wants celebrity status. Finally, when two or more people really want to accept that they are not really enemies but victims of circumstance and accept that those in power want use those in need and take advantage of the weak. I wish that we could, in reality, be like Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. We can learn much from that movie. Watch it!Read full review
I haven't watched all of them as yet. Too much Olympics on the air. I'll watch them after the Olympics & rate them later.... Thanks

This is one of my favorite movies. It features two of my favorite actors, Lee Marvin and Tosiro Mifune who are awesome together. I've watched the DVD many times , and would highly recommend it to everyone. The story is set in War World 2, about an American and Japanese soldier who are stranded on an island. It's good entertainment.
GOOD movie!!!! Excelent director with two superb actors. Do not expect lots of crazy action and gore but a very realistic-down to earth movie on the drama of two enemy soldiers who find themselves stranded in lost island. Is a story of the process of recognizing the other as a human being, despite the culture clashes, the language barrier and too many preconceptions that finally make them fail to recognize that ideology blurred the awareness of the feat they had been able to perform together as two human beings teaming up. One of those movies that can trigger a lot of reflection and be a conversation piece.
This movie is as good as I remembered and also a good value for the price!!

This is an excellent drama showing the human connection that exists between people. Here, the Japanese naval officer speaks Japanese and doesn't attempt to learn English; while, the American Marine officer only speaks English and doesn't attempt to learn Japanese. They still communicate. In a sense it was like listening to two dogs bark at each other, and watching as the dogs react understanding what the barks mean. This drama also demonstrates how silly is the prejudice factor between people, and how it gets in the way of relationships.
The alternative ending included is better than the actual ending. Still a great movie.
