  • Great Film!

City Lights (1931) One of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time. Written, directed, and starring Charlie Chaplin as his iconic “down-and-out” Tramp character. Filmed with a synchronized soundtrack of music and sound effects (but no dialogue), City Lights is still Chaplin’s magnum opus. As the tramp walks the city streets one day, he meets a blind flower girl and feels sorry for her. When he finds out she and her grandmother are going to be evicted by their landlord, the poverty-stricken tramp steps in to help. Fortunately, the tramp meets a drunken millionaire and is ultimately able to procure to necessary money to, not only pay the rent, but to also pay for an operation needed by the flower girl to restore her sight. Wonderful musical soundtrack by Charlie Chaplin and songwriter, Jose Padilla, who composed the flower girl’s theme music. Strong supporting performances by actors Virginia Sherrill as the flower girl and Harry Myers as the alcoholic millionaire. Lessons to be learned about the art of giving, and the inherent power of human kindness. Film is replete with iconic comedy scenes that are amazingly performed, namely the scenes when the tramp saves the millionaire’s life at the dock, and the hilarious boxing match. The ending is perhaps the greatest in all of film history. Have a box of Kleenex handy. Grade A+

  • Timeless title.

I studied this film in my high school cinema analysis course. The features showing the making of the motion picture are fascinating and the outtakes give incredible insight into how Chaplin- the film auteur- may have thought about his production. This is a must-have for any silent film or Chaplin buff.

  • A MASTERPIECE

I've seen about 50 full length feature silent films, some of them several times, and this one may very well be my favorite. It's a comedy, but very emotionally powerful as well. It is a very accessible film for modern viewers: I assigned it to 19 high school students with very little introduction, and their reviews were highly enthusiastic. Their AVERAGE on a scale of 1 to 10 was 9.1. In previous years (about 100 students total) their ratings were similar.
