SynopsisFrom the biplane era through World War II and into the jet age, Crocker Snow has lived the history of aviation. Amelia Earhart flew with him before she was famous and his first sport-flying license was signed by Orville Wright. During the late Twenties and early Thirties, he was a major figure in the growth of commercial aviation in New England, founding one of the regions first passenger and airmail companies. When war came, he established Air Corps ferrying bases in Maine, Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland, commanded a B-17 heavy bombardment group, and then flew B-29s. Snow returned to civilian life as the director of aeronautics for the state of Massachusetts and retired in 1976. In 1987, he was designated an Elder Statesman of Aviation by the National Aeronautics Association, and in 1997, he was named one of eleven Pioneers of the U.S. Air Force. A pilot of over 160 different models of airplane with more than 15,000 hours of flight time, Snow has always felt most at home in the cockpit. Here, the men are dashing and the women glamorous, and Snow, at one point pictured in his family's front yard, disabled from a knee wound, and coolly practicing target shooting while smoking a pipe, is as romantic a figure as ever emerged from a cockpit.
