I initially bought this Dyson vacuum for parts. I was informed that it powered on, had suction from the hose option, which is normal in the upright position, but not from the floor / brush option. After assessing its abilities, I was able to reseat the foot plunger pedal, which allowed the Air Input Changeover Valve to rotate into position. Voila! Now, I had floor / brush access. I disassembled the unit, cleaned filters and the cyclone. (You may want to read up on your specific vacuum when it comes to the cyclone assembly.) Passed soapy water through hoses and left everything out in the sun for a full day. It's TRULY IMPORTANT that everything is BONE DRY BEFORE USE! Reassembled this Dyson DC18 and vacuumed the floor, before proceeding outside to vacuum the car using the hose and brush. It works beautifully !! What was bought for parts wound up being a pretty nifty working vacuum. I'm extremely pleased with the outcome.Read full review

I just got my DC18 today and WOW,this thing works really well.I cant believe all the stuff this thing picked up!Even dog hair! However, there are a couple of complaints(but not with the seller).Seller was awesome.First, the locking mechanism to keep it upright doesnt always lock back in when you want it to.You have to manually kick the red pedal up to get the handle to lock.Secondly, this thing needs more metal parts instead of plastic ones. You can tell that this thing will probably break someday. There is just too many plastic parts on it and the way it was designed,it puts too much stress on the areas that are plastic. This probably aint gonna last long unless i baby it.If you were to accidentally twist it too hard or try to lock the handle a bit too hard, something is gonna give especially if it accidentally falls over.I did see that the handle will finally lock up right if you jerk the handle up quickly instead of slowly but that cant be good stressing out the plastic like that(maybe it just needs a break in period).Overall the machine works well and is pretty lightweight.I really cant believe such a small machine out cleans our old Dirt Devil bagged model. If it wasnt for the locking mechanism on the pedal not working unless you jerked on it quickly or locked it manually and the stress this vacuum creates on plastic parts,i would have given it an excellent rating.Still works great for such a small vacuum.Read full review
My wife & daughter love it. I am not thrilled with it. I think the Hoover windtunnel with power drive is a better vacuum because the hoover brushes beat and comb the carpet in one stroke where the Dyson has to be pulled back and forth numerous times to get the same effect. I feel like the hoover cleans deeper with much less strokes back and forth. The hoover weighs 24 LBS and the Dyson comes in at 16 LBS. The dyson is more of a girlie machine. The hoover is a mans vacuum. To be fair the dyson is a good machine and we have had no problems with it. The dyson's dirt container has to be emptied often where the bag in the hoover does not. I guess I just like to see the brushed effect on the carpet that the hoover leaves. It makes me feel better.
I've wanted a Dyson for quite awhile. I decided on the slim model and love it. It has great suction and is very easy to empty. It works great on my kitchen floor as well. The only drawback is the attachments are a little hard to use. I would definitely buy this product again, though. I would rather have an automatic retracting cord also.
Seems wobbly when I push it around. All the plastic has me a little paranoid about breaking it. However, nothing has broken yet and the suction is pretty much what Dyson claims.. awesome. The girlfriend has been loving it, says the tools are very handy. I find the design of the hose/wand very clever, but we'll see how it holds up. The "ball" feature seems like unnecessary moving parts to me and you have to learn how to handle a vacuum all over again, not that it's rocket science but still is awkward.
Love how it can get underneath cabinets and hard to reach places. Great suction and lightweight. I just wish it had a longer cord like the bigger dyson models

I love this vacuum!! My house is mostly tile with carpet in the bedrooms - and I have two large dogs (german shepherd and yellow lab) and a cat, so there is plenty of pet hair floating around! I've had the worst time finding a vacuum that I could use on my tile that would actually pick up the hair rather than spit it out in every direction and make a bigger mess. I had even become convinced that I would need to get two vacuums - one for the carpet and another for the bare floors....until I got this Dyson. This thing is amazing!! I could easily move from carpet to bare floor and back without having anything left behind! Naturally, I did the whole experiment with vacuuming an area of carpet with my old vacuum, then going back over the same area with the Dyson - and sure enough, the Dyson picked up an incredible amount of dirt and hair that my old vacuum had left behind. The only mildly negative things I could say about it are that the cord is a little shorter than I'm used to - but I've never been able to vacuum my entire house from one outlet anyway, so it's not a big deal. The other thing was that it was a tiny bit more difficult to maneuver the vacuum on my thick shag area rug - but considering how clean it left the rug afterwards, I will gladly deal with it! Overall, it was pretty lightweight and easy to move around - and I'm a small person, too (5'1"). The telescoping wand and attachments are so convenient and easy to use - much more user-friendly than other vacuums I've had. I truly believe Dyson lives up to the hype and is worth the higher price!Read full review
The DC18 model has now been discontinued, you will find some great buys on ebay if you are lucky enough to find a new DC18. Dyson now gives a 5 year warranty on these machines. You will be very pleased with the ease of use and although there are not alot of attachments onboard a DC18, many of the attachments will fit DC18. This is my third Dyson and will not buy any other machine. I now have two DC18 and a DC17 Animal. I have replaced all the machines I use in my carpet cleaning business and recommend Dyson to all my clients. In my cleaning process, I always vacuum the carpets first, clients will tell me .. I have already vacuumed so there's no need too, but I insist on doing with the Dyson. They are always amazed that the Dyson picked up more than the machine they were using. Few people realize that if you read the instructions on your vacuum, it will tell you that you need to start with a new bag everytime you vacuum. This can get very expensive as you know. Many of the newer uprights are now bagless and the Dyson out preforms my Hoover WindTunnel, The Dirt Devil and the Oreck, yes ... the Oreck. I strongly suggest, if you need a light weight vacuum that preforms like a full size upright, look for a new DC18 on ebay. The DC25 is the new Ball style and operates as nice as the DC18. Hope this review helps.Read full review
Okay, so here is the skinny on the Dyson Model DC18 vacuum cleaner --- "THIS THING REALLY SUCKS", and I mean it. I put off purchasing a Dyson for several years, and don't know why it took me so long. This is one hell of a cleaning machine. It is really maneuverable and it never breaks suction. When I was taking it out of the box, I thought initially, it was kind of cheap because the whole thing is made of plastic. I assembled it and started vacuumed the entire house. When I was finished, I couldn't believe the dirt it pulled from my carpet and wood floors. I thought my house was really clean, and this machine had too go and make me look like a crumb. Because of the ease of use, light weight, maneuverability, and suction, I would give it a ten on a scale of one to ten. The price seems high, but really isn't when you consider the job this machine does. My advise --- BUY IT!!!Read full review
I have 4 dogs and can't live without a Dyson. Each succesive model is more powerful than the previous. I've had a DC07 for 8 years and a DC14 for 2 years, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. The DC18 didn't disappoint me. I was pleasantly surprised at how small, light, and maneuverable it is. Unlike the full size DC07 and DC14, DC18 can practically turn on a dime and fits under a lot of furniture where the others don't. It's easier to carry up and down stairs. It has a kick plate making it easier to turn on, and the bare floor/carpet switch is right next to the on-off switch - no more having to change the control with my foot. The DC18 also does a much better job of vacuuming a bare floor - so I can avoid the hassle of attaching the floor tool. Power cord is shorter, and canister is a bit smaller, but I guess that contributes to making it lighter. Detaching the hose to reach corners, ceilings and crevices is also streamlined and very easy compared to the older models. I love this vacuum cleaner - and it almost makes vacuuming enjoyable.Read full review
