With this unit, I'd gone to our local Wal-mart (we live very remotely and have few local alternatives) to see what they had available, their prices and what features each offered. They only had 3 that fell into my criteria - the first of which offered the forward or progressive scan to make the image resonably viewable on an HD tv. And I admit that name recognition played no small part in buying something I know nothing about. So, for a beginner unit - I liked the listed features for recording and dubbing and at a reasonable price - $148.00. I won this unit for less than half that - new in the box! I like the menu layout and it's ease of navigation, but I wish the accompanying manual explained some things better. It seems to rely on some prior knowledge by the buyer in setting and configuring the unit that i simply didn't have by virtue of never having owned one of these before. I also like that the unit can control my satelite recvr - but wish that it could do it much more intelligently and comprehensively than simply changing channels. To me, it's something that was added mainly as a selling point rather than something the user would actively use. I should also mention that my Sat. Rcvr is a DVR - so much of what I wish to record are items that I've previously recorded. This recorder cannot access those items nor allow me to configure/synch them to record - this must be done manually. Perhaps a higher level unit in the future will have this capability. Overall, I really like the playback quality of the recordings and the ease of use of the menu items - very fast, easy to use familiarization. I would recommend this recorderRead full review
A friend lives out in the country and out of the new "digital" signal range. Among other things I use this recorder to copy her favorite programs as available. This recorder fits the bill. It's easy to use and works just right for my purposes. I am not a "techno Geek" and yet instrucions and set up were clear, concise and easyto apply. I was able to use it right away. My friend enjoys the quality of the copied programs. So now you have two happy customers. Thank goodness I don't have to record VHS tapes any longer.
Good quality and works great, but Sony recorders will not record anything that is copy protected, even from HBO or other premium channels. Most newer movies on premium channels are copy protected. If you try to record it pops up a window to tell you the movie is copy protected and can not be recorded. I have had three other brands of DVD recorders that did not care. I bought a brand new Toshiba that records anything. The Sony is going in the closet for backup.
I love my dvr works just fine and eazy to record

I have owned 3 dvd recorders in the past 10 years or so... I first bought a Philips, then a Magnavox. Both of which quit working after a year or two. The third I bought was a Sony; I have had it 6 years now and it is still going strong! I bought this model as a back-up for when my current Sony finally does give out. I only wish Sony was still manufacturing them, but it looks like they're not. Although this model doesn't have a built-in tuner, I can still use it easily to record from my cable box or copy my old VHS tapes. I used to believe buying products with the high-end "brand names" (like Sony) was foolish, and that I could get the same quality from lesser brand names, but I've learned my lesson. You get what you pay for and I am sold on Sony.
